View Full Version : Constant CTDs; Any Ideas?

I am getting constant CTDs (every mission or two). If there is a pattern to them at all, the CTDs seem to generally occur when I am either using the external view to look at my sub, or when the sub is damaged or destroyed, but not always. At first I thought it was some wierd combo of mods, but I am getting the same problem on a clean 1.3 install.
My system:
Windows Vista Home Premium
Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS (158.24)
SigmaTel Audio
Intel T7400 Dual 2.16
2 GB RAM

Lets start with the two simplest things...
1) Turn off all background processes (AV, IM etc)
2) Turn down "Hardware Sound Accelleration" in Dxdiag.
JCC
Check out a free program called EndItAll or something like it....shuts down all non essential stuff running in background.

Your right with the "EndItAll". Have had this since win98 and it works like a champ.
Here is the newest version and it might work with Vista. Note I said "it might".

I am not aware of any way to adjust sound acceleration in Vista. Certainly, the option is not available under the DirectX Diagnostic or the Sound panel in the Control Panel.
I have everthing turned off that I can.

I'm borrowing this thread a bit :ping:
Is anyone else having occasional CTD's when clicking the binocular icon? I've been having these ever since the 1.0 and been doing reinstalling, uninstalling, cleaning the registry, reinstalling etc. but doesn't help. Gladly, this happens rarerly but it still bugs me

Can you tell how high time compression you are using when these happen? Seems like these CTD's are related to high TC use but I'm not completely sure

Just happened again :damn:
Wanted to get a weather report to see whether I needed to hide from an approaching aircraft or not.
Since I got the aircraft radar warning, I figure the game dropped down to x8 tc (or perhaps even lower).
When I got the warning I was running att 2048 or perhaps 1024.
Just to clarify, I did not try to enter the bridge, I just wanted to access the icons listed under the bridge icon.

That's excatly the same kind of CTD I get sometimes. Don't even need to enter to the bridge. Only needs to click the bridge icon...
But it seems to be some kind of high TC issue. Ever since I've started using radio mods and running fairly low TC (max 512) these CTD's have decreased. So my only advice to everyone with this kind of problem is to avoid high TC
Download a few radio packs and enjoy the view

On the subject of enditall. I found another program similar to that called SmartClose. I found it to better overall. Although for a long time now ive just been using a custom batch file to close and open all programs.

Good. Whatever it takes to shut down most of the background when playing SH4 ( any major Sim/Game for that matter ) and turn off the Internet, SH4 will run a lot smoother and really lessen the CTD's if a problem.
In another thread in this forum I said where I had ctd's during SH4 until I found out I had the wrong type ram in my machine, right size but wrong speed. Since they have been replaced I've never had a ctd yet and since I'm retired I played SH4 a lot and being ctd less the SH4 enjoyment really comes out.:smug: :) And of course I don't have SH4 wide open either ( close but not full ) for that is another reason SH4 crashes for some people as they JUST must have the best but their computer says.....Oh no you don't.
A good place to go to find out your computers memory status and exactly what type memory stick it requires is here:

On the bino ctd, what year is it?
Are you using any mods?
binos or periscope CTDs might possibly be a graphics issue, but it is also exatly what happens when there is a mission problem with ships in render range. Dumb things like the convoy is told to make 3 columns, but there are only 2 ships.

Well, in my case most of these CTD's has happened in 1941. Currently running a bunch of mods but I've had these even without mods
But I'm 100% sure that I haven't had a single CTD when it comes to periscope. Pretty much only when I click the bridge icon

Have you fixed these in your "Improved campaing layers mod"? Just asking cause it's one of the mods I'm using
Most of them, yes, I haven't CTDed in a while. If you see such a CTD, post it in my thread, and I will do my best to crush it.
There are hundreds and hundreds of groups, it's really hard to make sure I haven't missed any, though after jace's suggestion about the columns, I think I looked at every single one.

On using EnditAll et al,....if you have broadband, and unless you can find a way to disconnect from the internet, be careful not to shutdown your firewall and other protections. With broadband you are always "on" the internet wether or not your have a browser open.

I'm in '42. Using TM 1.4
My crashes have most of the time happened while no units are within visual range, and at least sometimes while no units within radar range either, and me being well outside shipping lanes, which suggests to me that it is not a graphics issue.
Btw, love your campaign layer, but it's a bit of a challenge in a pigboat w/o surface radar :)

My last two CTDs were
1. watching a torp hit a small freighter( the instant it hit) w/camera mode.
2. running for home using TC. :damn:
MODs yes.

1. is a known CTD. The Small Modern COmposite Merchant will CTD every single time when a certain critical damage occurs.

I'll look into that 42 ctd. Where was it, and what month, that'll help me narrow it down.

I too get the Binocular icon crash sometimes, using the appropiate hotkey gets around it though.

I'm only in the first half of 42 so far. Crashes have occured since begining of 42 and at least up to May. The ones I remember have occured in the southern parts, one ESE of Surabaya, one very close to Freemantle. I think I remember one happening in Sulu Sea, when I was about to slip out into South China Sea north of Borneo as well.
Rgr, I'll make sure those groups are OK. There is an issue if the group has toomany columns set. Ie: the group wants to form 2 columns, and there is a single ship 100% of the time, and a others with %s other than 100. Even if it means 2+ ships 99.99999999% of the time, you hit that 1 time with 1 ship, and it'll CTD.

Downloaded the above freighter fix. If you are referring to my other CTD it happened in April 42. Between Saipan and Wake as I was heading home for more torps(broom attached to mast:rock: ). I was in the starter boat.4 tubes forward , 2 aft.

Mine crashes a lot. I can be just watching and it will crash. It seems to like to crash when I use the time compression feature, but it will crash without it being used.
I just reformatted and downloaded and installed the latest drivers etc. And it still crashes.
I am currantely using the 1.2 patch. Doesn't seem to matter though what patch I use
Maybe I need to turn the graphics down a bit.

Happened again last night:damn: . Heading for PH, April 16 - 18th, 42. Approx 1200 nm out. Got the Capt Midnight on the radio, time compression and ... desktop.
what mods. try disabling the sound related mods first, i think i read they can have some issues hardware dependant.
