Hi Everyone,
SH4 is crashing \ freezing up a lot. So much so that it is unplayable. The problem is worse since patch 1.3. I went back to 1.2 and it helped but didn’t eliminate the problem.
I have installed reinstalled, fooled with game settings and video card settings, added and removed mods etc, but no joy.
Here are my system specs:
OS: Windows XP pro ver 2002 service pack 2
Processor: Amd Athlon XP 2700 2.17 GHz, 1.5 GB of ram
Nvidia Gforce 7800 GSOC Video card.
I have been reading the posts but am still at a loss to figure out what’s going on.
I do have a spyware program that is running in the background (SpySweeper) and that may well be a problem.
Any help would be appreciated. SH4 is a great game that I would love to get to run in a stable condition.
Thanks for any input!

Probably a good idea to close background processes before starting SH4. If you have a lot of stuff running it might be eating up your system memory. (What are your virtual memory settings? Do you have enough there?)

I'll also ask the obligatory standard question about having the latest drivers, blah, blah, blah. :)

Any mods running? I managed to break my install of SH4 with too much fiddling with mods and had to re-install the whole works.

EDIT: Don't forget sound card drivers. They get neglected a lot, especially if you have on board sound.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I uninstalled the SpySweeper and have gone back to patch 1.2 (reinstalled the game)
I am not running any mods at this time (have run the Trigger Maru and others in the past)
I do have onboard sound. I think I have the latest drivers. SH 4 has always locked up occasionally but since 1.3 it has gotten worse. I have a feeling that the spyware program has something to do with it. Since it was uninstalled I started a new career, and although I have only run the game about 15 to 20 mins since then, it hasn’t locked up yet.

Could you explain the virtual memory thing and tell me how to check\adjust it?

Anyway, I hope I can eventually run the game with 1.3 and the Trigger Maru mod.
I really enjoy it when it runs good.
Thanks for the help

Virtual memory is the Windows swap file on the hard drive. You can check it by right-clicking on the My Computer icon and selecting "properties". From there, choose the "advanced" tab, then click the settings button under "performance". This will bring up another small window, choose the "advanced" tab again and you'll see virtual memory at the bottom. It should tell you how much is being used by Windows. It should be set to allow Windows to control it by default, which should be okay. But with crashes, it's always good to check things.

Try this as well (it's an oldie but a goodie).

Start >> Run >> type "DXDIAG"

Select the "Sound" tab

Move the "Hardward Sound Accelleration Level:" Slider all the way to the left, "No Accelleration".

Then click exit.
