OK who's the boss of tonnage in SH4 ? Here's mine at 537,902 tonnes so far.

The AI skipper at the bottom of my above post list already tried that.

Next time your in port take a pic and lets see how many sampa..........er merchants tonnage you have sunk.

A sampan would probably fit nicely in this hole.

Ever seen what happens when you hit a sampan with a torpedo?

Big explosion, something goes flyin into the air and then the sampan is capsized and floating about a foot under water.

There is about 150 or so tonnes of Sampans & fishing boats in this but hey they squeal on you. Wonder if that's a reason for some of the fast air attacks out of nowhere ? :hmm:

With the exception of the Tigger Maru 1.3 mod (I run no mods except green button, and one or two changes to certain settings like radio contact distances) I run at 85 percent or better. I gots a pair o 40s on my decks and a 4.5 on the bow.

I don't take time to ID ships, and I run manual targeting mostly by guaging deflection shooting from the attack map.

Guys, guys I started this thread just for fun and it does not matter if you run at 100% or 10% ( if it goes that low ? ). I play at 52% with limited fuel, batt, duds, realistic repair, limited compressed air, limited oxygen, realistic reload, and the rest of it is for my crew to do as I've never seen or heard of a captain of any large vessel run it 100%, course if he could do it that way it sure would save expenses. Oh did I mention I pay those seagulls plenty of minnows for reporting my overhead view. Gotta see where I've been let alone where I'm going.

Snuffy and RENEGADE-623 have beat me to pieces and Snuffy plays harder than I do. I've been on 3 careers before this one and never got very far before Davey Jones was shaking my hand but this one I started with a Tambor class USS Tuna and finally wound up with the Gato.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/MyfirstSH4patrol-1.jpg

I've been on 8 missions and always bring back plenty of tonnage on the log which keeps me away from the dreaded desk job. My last trip to port ( Brisbane ) from up around the Rabaul area was almost a disaster for about 150 nm from rabaul a DD got on my case and almost showed me what for. I got away from him ( good ole heavy fog and Japans lousy radar ) but paid a heavy price of a gaping hole near the port side bow. forward torpedo room badly flooded, torp doors busted, both AA guns blown to hell and back, deck gun made into shredded cheese, ten men injured at 80%, three men dead. Bless this Sim/Game for even at 52% my Adrenalin was working over time.
I hobbled to Tulagi and refueled but my tanks leaked almost as fast as it was put in I believe so I hauled butt at full flank the short distance to Brisbane ( about 1200 nm ? ) and limped in port with about 5% left in the tanks. Found out if I would have slowed along at 1/3 or so I'd be at the bottom of the Coral Sea. Anyway I made it and Brisbane repaired my sub like new and since I completed 3 missions on that turn and turned in 121,306 tonnes I never heard a thing about any desk job. ( probably next time in ? )

My new tonnage as of Oct 24 1943: ( still not as much as Snuffy and RENEGADE-623 :damn: )

Anyway, aint no way in hell anyones scoring tonnage like that in TMaru 1.4, i don't care what realism setting you play on. :D

That said, in SH3, i once had the goal of joining not the 100K club, but the 1M club. Best i could do with 80% realism from 1942 to 1945 was just under 500K. I have no tonnage scores for Sh4 yet.

I'll take that as truth. In TM 1.4 a cruise with 20,000 tons is a monster. I've been very lucky this cruise and have 15,500. I'm leaving the Korea Straight in between two of the islands where it looks tempting to take a shortcut. Exactly halfway through the straight I've been jumped by the meanest destroyer this side of Bungo Pete. We've been dancing now for almost two hours. I have 2/3 of my battery left and have decided to try to make it back to the Korea Straight and deeper water. I only have 200' available here, no layer and this guy just ran out of depth charges on his last run....I think.

He still makes runs and I can't afford to be wrong about him being out of ashcans. On the other hand I have about 15 miles to deeper water and have to stretch the battery. On the other hand (oops, out of hands) he can call in any available buddies, including airplanes. In TM 1.4 you DON'T shoot it out with destroyers on the surface. I shot 3 torps from the stern tubes at
AOB zero and less than 1000 yards. He maneuvered away from all 3.

With destroyers this good and most convoys protected by three or four, I have to agree with Ducimus here. If you're looking for max tonnage, stay away from TM 1.4! On the other hand, just like pitching a shutout in baseball, there's no thrill like running a destroyer out of depth charges with no damage to your sub! I take more pride in that than 100,000 tons. If I survive. ALL AHEAD EMERGENCY! GIVE ME 25º RIGHT RUDDER! I want 10 seconds only, then return to 1/3... :arrgh!:

Sounds like a ton of fun RR ... and just for the record, when I finish this current career with the way I have my sim set up now, I'll seriously consider sticking TM 1.4 and the 1.3 patch on and having a go at it.

(I haven't patched to 1.3 yet as I haven't been back to home port for a couple months now. [game time] Think I'll be headed home here shortly though. I'll run the 1.3 after I get in port.)

Rockin Robbins

Patching to 1.3 works fine if you're in port at the time. Same for TM 1.4. You can then continue your career with no problems. Just don't do it at sea.

Before I left for work this morning, this crazy destroyer made five runs at me with no depth charges. Incredible! Must be one of those legendary TM 1.4 elites. He is GOOD. I think he's equal to any I encountered in GWX with SH3. If I can reach deep water, if I can't shake him then before I run out of battery, things are going to get real interesting.

I hate to think about a gun duel, but it may happen. I still have a couple torpedoes in both ends to try first. They were supposed to be birthday gifts for some nice tankers too.

I was also under the false impression that upgrading would cause me to have to start over, like the last patch did. Having a non compatable save file or some effect like that.

i got a new tactic for destroyers. i will sneak up on a convoy, let the destroyers see me, dive down to 165 feet, silent running, get back to the convoy, sink a ple ships, then let the destroyers see me, dive back down yet again, get back to the convoy and repeat it quite efective, altho sometimes they do get a lucky dc near me after the third time. this is with no mods and apatched to 1.3. i just wonder if they wil ever smarten up to what im doing LOL but i put at least one torpedo in each ship, then let them sink on their own, those that dont, i put another torpedo in them. time consuming but oh well, and i dont end patrol right away eoither, i will go to base, resupply with torps and head out again to sink more. my luck tho is bound to run out with the destroyers. i might have to get tm with bungo pete just to see if i can outsmart him. i love dodging destroyers LOL then think about the hell they going to face when they get back home and get bitched at casue they couldnt protect a convoy from one submarine. LMAO

DD Captains don't get that luxury with me.

I think part of the reason for the longevity of my current career at this time is that my SOP is to wipe the escorts from the mix first, then casually take out the unprotected merchants.

Dunno. :hmm:

tater
07-31-07, 01:24 PM
In the stock game the 4 escorts on the convoys are all set to novice. Wiping them out isn't terribly sporting, they are lame even when they try. ;)

RR, what year is it, BTW? Unless it's late war, I either missed something, or you've been hitting the DD jackpot, because 3-4 DDs are rare in the layers I've actually messed with. I tend to replace the bulk of the DDs with small escorts (SC and MS), with maybe a destroyer as the escort leader, sometimes more than one, but rarely.

Minekazes are more likely than any other escort type, too, since they were older and were used this way (with their nearly identical follow on class, the kamikaze class). I also use minekaze where wakatake and Momi class ODDs might be used, or TBs, and other ~1000 ton escort types.

Rockin Robbins
07-31-07, 04:04 PM
Last cruise I ran into 2 convoys with about 12 merchants apiece, both escorted by 3 destroyers each, it was August or September of 1942 east of Honshu, SH 1.2. I had just removed RFB to learn manual targeting and I will add the list of mods when I get home from work.

This cruise with SH 1.3 and TM 1.4 no convoys sighted. Twice I have encountered two destroyers together with no convoy, one group of 2 unescorted merchants, 3 fishing boats and the bad guy I've been dancing with for 2 hours now, who seems to have run out of depth charges but still makes runs on me. I'll edit this post within the hour.

Edit: I was running dark recognition manual, DRB_JAP_US_GB_Airbases_VS4, Living Breathing Ocean fix, Natural Sinking Mechanics 2.6, and Pull Down Pacific Map for SH4 High Res. It's September 30, 1942 in my game right now so it must have been late August or early September.

Not sure how to find my total tonage, but I have been using TM 1.4 through out.

Im on patrol #4.

In patrol #3 alone, with TM 1.4 and Realistic Ship sinking, I hit a nice 54,000 tons. One large sinking was a ISA Battleship weighing a wopping 33000 tons.

How do you take screenshots BTW?

Rockin Robbins
07-31-07, 05:40 PM
Ctrl-F11 takes a screenshot and puts in in the main program directory where you'll never look for it! Each screenshot is given a separate name so you can do 100 if you want and look at them late.

@chopped50ford a nice battleship will help the tonnage numbers every time. :arrgh!: The only time I've seen a battleship was my first half hour of playing on full manual. The convoy full of capital ships was in a terrible position for me and I got to the convoy just in time to have it run by at 30 knots and laugh in my general direction. I popped off six shots from 2500 yards out and watched em all miss. I didn't even understand the procedure for aiming a shot yet and it's a wonder they didn't circle around and sink me.:rotfl:What's the tonnage for sinking a Tambor?

chopped50ford
07-31-07, 06:15 PM
believe me when I say the battleship sinking was purely by accident. I ran into a convoy of capital ships. Shot 6 torps at the 2nd and largest battleship in the group. (The one w/ the tall and heavy superstructure)

I hit the 4th ship behind the large BB and scored (2) nice holes into the side of her hull.

I thought she was going to pull out of it, but within an hours time, she was capsized on her sized with here superstructure stuck in the mud. :)

It was a great feeling, but also majorly dissapointing since out of 10 torpedo shots, only (3) hit. [last one hit the stern of a Crusier and knocked off a screw. She listed a bit to the rear, but no luck with her going under.:(] The rest of the time was sitting low and keeping quite until they left.

Ctrl + F11 and it will save to your SH4 directory as a bitmap image. There are many ways of doing it but I have "PhotoImpression" which will change the bitmap to a JPEG, send the JPEG to somewhere like "Photobucket", copy and paste here in your post.

Had two-thirds battery left and was playing pattycake with Mr Destroyer. After the tenth dry run or so, I figured he's lost his teeth, so I came up to periscope depth. It seemed like he had a harder time tracking me at periscope depth! Anybody have any info on that? So I poked up the scope to see how he conducted business.

I'm still freakin about running him clear out of ashcans, but he's still plenty dangerous. Probably on the radio with his little airplane buddies or other tin cans. Earlier in the battle, when he was running at me and I shot three in a spread he outmaneuvered the torps and just ran over me. That was bad because he wasn't out of depth charges yet.

Don't want to do that again. So I waited to see how he conducted his attack. High speed approach and run over me. Lets off on the throttle after he's a hundred yards beyond me and lolligags out there. Hmmmmmm... I'll try one torpedo and see what I can do next run.

Stuck up the scope so he saw it, and just like old Ferdinand the bull he charges at 30 kt! I just lowered the scope and stayed put. Raised it after he passed. Angle on the bow 180º. Speed who cares!!! Range, mark! 400 yards. Wait one... Fire three. One up the poop chute while he's pickin his nose, eh? BOOOOOOOOOM! He lifted up and came down in two flaming pieces. How do I do this?.... @#$@##!!!! Who'da thought Google would have problems linking. Photobucket time!!!!

Ah, tis better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. This Japanese destroyer was worthy of any Limey tin can in the English Channel. It was Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier. One mistake and somebody dies. He got first shot with over 100 depth charges in dozens of deadly accurate runs with me in only 200' of water. I tried him earlier with that spread of 3 and came up empty. He almost killed me there. But he was the one that made his allotted one fatal mistake this time. Everybody's entitled to just ONE of those, you know.

I machine gunned the lifeboat. It isn't enough to destroy the boat, you must kill men who are that dangerous before they kill your friends on a future patrol. War is hell and sometimes we love it so. I'll apologize to the man upstairs when I get there, but our meeting has been posponed for now. Let me just breathe the fresh surface air and smell the smoke of victory.

"Hey Cookie, fire up that oven and get to work on our victory cake!"
