View Full Version : Might want to stay away from here.

I was stationed at Perth when received orders to employ the Philippine area ( actually star was very close "South China Sea" ) so I thought I'd head up the back way ( so to speak ) as I knew I'd need to save fuel for I'd probably get a couple more runs before HDQ let me come home. So after resupplying fuel at "Exmouth Gulf" tender I hit the sea up the back alley ( ) toward my mission target only to find out this area ( Map view ) is VERY shallow for PD running. I took a lot of time getting through here by setting still all day then surfacing at night and running 2/3 speed until day break then PD and Wait again. I did not want any encounters before I came up to my first mission as I've sort of learned my lesson on that as to not having any fuel or ammo left WAAAY far from any refit.

In shots below I felt it was not safe to run at PD in 17 ft. waters, not worried about the rocks as the devs made them like jello ( ) as the sub can run right through them. The ground itself comes up fast in this area and I did not feel like beaching at low tide. One spot just north of where the sub icon is shown on map it is 9 ft deep and that's cutting it close.

I did in the end make it and also received three more orders before coming home on fumes and no ammo period, but I don't think I'll go that way north again from Perth. :)

Reminds me of some of those photo recon missions that send you into harbors that are like 20 foot deep :p

Makes it real interisting.

The white background on the map should be a clue you don't want to spend a lot of time in those areas. Deffinately not as a transit route. White areas vary in depth from 0-48 feet. It was in water only 60 feet a German Uboat was sunk by its own circle run torpedo off the US E coast.

Water that shallow should only be ventured when there is no other choice and for as short as possible.

Take a stab as playing the Quick Mission "Against All Odds" and you'll gain more appareciation for the problems shallow water presents to subs.

Since you seem to be playing TM, some of the usual routes might also require work now. ;)

I'd make that crossing at night, and only at night.

Any sensible japanese port admiral in the region would put patrols on all those straits, even if all he has to work with are a couple subchasers, some trawlers, and the odd old DD assigned to him for a month or two.

I got caught in that Karimata Strait once... and it only took once for me to learn to stay away from there... I'll take the long way 'round Borneo, thank you very much.

I know there is a mod that makes the rocks more realistic but they are still jello.

What would be a nice mod is rocks that are solid, bet that would be interesting. :arrgh!:

Would be a nice effect ^^^, the stock ones just looked so bizarre I had to
get the smaller mod for them :yep:

Indeed, the 'jello rocks' are there to make up for the fact that the bottom is not sand, but concrete slab!
