Hi all.
I'm new to SHIII. It's the first U-boat sim I've played since I wore out my copy of Aces of the Deep ten plus years ago.
Is the GWX mod the only mod I should install to get the most of SHIII?
Also, I've seen some tonnage reports posted by others that lists not only the type of ship sunk but the actual name of the ship. Stock SHIII doesn't appear to tell me the names of the ships I have sunk, so I suspect it's one of the third party mods..??
Thanks for any input.

Welcome Aboard :D
GWX is an ecellent choice. Theres alot of good mods out there check them all out. The choice should be up to you. Your the Kapitan.
GWX is great but I would recommend you play stock for like 2 - 2.5 weeks to get acquainted to the controls. Then get GWX it rocks.
The boat names?? I think they made them up.
Oh and try manual targeting asap it is really kewl
Welcome aboard to this jolly nest of ruffians. Go GWX, it's GWXing :D

Welcome aboard sir! I would say GWX is a good pick too. If you need it, I got it uploaded on my FileFront,
you'll need
GWX.exe
GWX-1.bin
GWX-2.bin
GWX-3.bin
GWX-4.bin
GWX-5.bin
All of them need to be in a folder together and you got to have a clean unmodded SH3 patched to 1.4 and then all you gotta do is double click your GWX.exe and away you go. Then get GWX103.exe to bring the installation of GWX up to date.
All GWX material is in my sig there where the link is in bold. There are others round here who have GWX uploaded besides myself. :)
Be sure to try some of the other mods on offer too, and practicing with SH3 unmodded before hand, is an excellent idea. So you get used to things.

Welcome to the board, and I totally agree with what TJ said GWX&SH3Cmdr are the way to go:up: not tried SH3Gen,what is it?and where do you get it:hmm:
SH3Gen is an external mod that generates intelligence reports and provides additional immersion for the SHIII world.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all of the great information! :D
I'm going to play the unmodded version for a bit until I get comfortable with the boat. I went ahead and learned how to do the manual firing solutions right off the bat and plan on sticking with them. It's pretty satisfying when you put in the work and get the eels on target. This is a great sim!
Some info on my first career:
Currently commanding the U-4, a Type II boat out of Wilhelmshaven. I have two patrols in the books but I've only managed to sink 10500 tons between the two patrols.
A bad storm along the English coast made for some rough hunting on my first patrol. Enemy aircraft forced me down a few times and I ended up spending a lot of time patrolling on the surface during the night, and resting submerged during the day. Got into a side by side sprint with a C2 in rough ocean -- so rough that the conning tower was swamped on a few occasions. He surprised my watch and I never got into a great firing position to begin with - loosed a salvo of two torps once I got along side of him, but both went wide. Broke contact afterwards, low on gas. Headed for home and ran across a coastal merchant. Sunk it and headed home with two torps onboard, but too low on fuel to loiter.
Second patrol went better -- actually ran into two lone ships (a small merchant and a C2) before ever making it to my patrol sector. I sunk both, but they almost refused to go down and I used all 5 torpedoes in doing so. Admittedly, some of my shots could have been placed better, but all 5 found their mark. Scouted my assigned sector to complete the mission and headed home.
Patrol three has me going up near Norway. Norway is still neutral, so I'm not exactly sure what to expect.

Well probably neutral Norwegians then.. ;)
Sounds like you're enjoying the sim!
If you like to play with high realism settings it might be a good idea to do some reading on this forum's archives. It's full of experience and wisdom!
Just try the search option.
Sounds to me like you are doing just fine. Keep up the good work! Even after playing this thing for nearly 3 years I'm finding stuff out that I didn;t know it could do or am surpised by a situation or behaviour I haven;t seen before. Fascinating stuff and one of the few games I've played for so long.

Welcome aboard
When I first got SH3, I played it for about 3-4 weeks before getting GWX, just so I could get used to the game.
GWX is THE way to go:rock: , just expect it to be a whole lot harder!

Welcome.
I recomend you start with a type II boat, as it only carries 6 torps, you will not want to fire a torp unless you know its gonna be a hit....
Also the type II is highly manovrable, and its an easy boat to learn crew managment with..
Good Hunting!
