Hello fellow kuleuns,

I've been away with various things taking up my time, like reinstalling win XP and now I can't get SH3 to run. :-?

I reinstalled SP2 plus all updates, then did the normal clean install of SH3, installed patch 1.4b, used multiSH3 and installed GWX. When I start SH3, after the copy protection the screen goes black and my system gets very sluggish. The same happens with stock SH3. When I used enditall to kill SH3 I got an 0x00000004 (Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices error), could not read error.

I have an Envy 24HT sound card (that worked fine with SH3 before). I downloaded the latest driver, but when I tried installing it I got "access denied." This happened with using both the setup that came with the new driver and when trying to install it manually. Windows finds the driver, but I still got "access denied." Also, when I rebooted I got "protection error, error 85," which I googled and could only find an obscure reference to Win NT. Help!

G'day Shegeek good to see you back.

Sorry to hear your are having problems. When you have a look at the file properties of the drivers do you see any write protection on?

Are you able to install another game that uses the sound drivers?

Have you checked that you can get sounds from Windows or another app or by playing a CD/DVD?

Another check is to got to Start select Control Panel then System and check the Device Manager under Hardware. Under Sound, vidoe and game controllers is there a yellow triangle with a "!" in it? If so then there may be an addressing problem with your sound card or a hardware fault.

Thanks :sunny:

Yes, there was read-only on all of the sound driver files I could find, both old and new (e.g. in Windows\system32 and the latest driver files) that I removed, but the new driver still gave me access denied. I'm going to keep digging and might post the problem on an experts forum.

Are you able to install another game that uses the sound drivers?
Yes, I tried two other games and they ran fine using the older drivers (that ran SH3).

Have you checked that you can get sounds from Windows or another app or by playing a CD/DVD?
Yes, I can play mp3 files thru WMP and windows sounds play as usual. I even tried uninstalling the envy drivers, removed the sound card and rebooted, loading the nvidia on-board drivers and SH3 still locked up, while another game (Swat4) worked fine.

Another check is to got to Start select Control Panel then System and check the Device Manager under Hardware. Under Sound, vidoe and game controllers is there a yellow triangle with a "!" in it? If so then there may be an addressing problem with your sound card or a hardware fault.
There was no exclamation point. Unless anyone else has any bright ideas and since everything else except SH3 works, I'm going to try another uninstall / reinstall. :shifty:

Canovaro: yes, I'm running under admin rights.

Sounds specific to SHIII install. When you do the uninstall make sure you clean the registry of any SHIII related remnants. Hope you get it going agin soon.
