View Full Version : Torpedos...low on fuel?

Just curious, but does the "dud" factor also include torpedos "running out of gas" sooner than thier expected distance to travel?
I had (2) two torps last night fall short of a cargo ship by 100'. What a dissapointment. a third exploded 5 seconds in front of the boat as well.
The ship was approx. 2500' in front of me...and I was running both (dual speed) torps at max speed which is rated to 4500'
Any input on this?
dont forget that the ships you fire torpedos at are moving and the distance they are at when you fire them may not be the one they are when torpedo reaches the 4500
anyway why setting them to fast speed ? ... its not SH3 even if the torpedo was painted yellow with bright lights the ships dont change direction untill hit.

true true, but (from my perspective) when trying to catch a ship on its anticipated "come-around" from zig zagging, I dont want to waste any time.
Good point. Ill slow em down. :)

@chopped50ford,
Your best bet is to get to 1000 yards ( approx. 1/2 mile ) from where you want to fire the torp, sit at PD and wait for the right second..............SLOOOSH....................BLA LOOEY......the end.
Never charge one like a rino as your just going to waste torps and/or you sub's gonna get hurt in the process somehow.
Now go sink something. :arrgh!:

Not true in my experience actually.

I've only seen ships change course when they become aware of your sub in SH4, and once or twice because they happened to reach a waypoint and changed course to head toward the next one. I distinctly remember DD's in SH3 speeding up or slowing down in an effort to avoid incoming torpedos, but I've never seen that in SH4. They do make a lot of semi random speed changes as part of their normal ASW behaviour, but it's not quite the same.
Not that I don't want this to be true, but I've never seen a Japanese vessel appear at all concerned about the wakes streaming toward them. Perhaps they figure all the American torpedos are duds, anyway. Anyone else seen this?

If your torpedoes are running out of steam (or batteries) before reaching their targets your taking shots from WAY to far out.
In all the time Ive been playing Ive only had one torp come up short of its target and that was because I lined up the wrong column of the convoy
Preamature detonations are another thing. If the torpedo suddenly dissapears from the screen most likely it was a premie. If the sort of slow and stop but remain on the screen ... they ran out of fuel.

so ... in your game instalation ships turn when they see the wake of the torpedo ?
please let me know how you did it im shure many people will thank you for this if you turn it in to a MOD
