View Full Version : Any recommendations about an XCOM1 remake?
Was googl'ing, looking for such a title, getting lot of hits. Does any1 here know about a good remake for one of the best games ever? :yep:
Was thinking about a freeware, not one of the "UFO:AFTER..." series.
thanks,

There are several, although none of them are nearly as good as the original.

Even the one that is based on it? Let me see if I can go find that.

I'm confused - which one of these is as good as its predecessor?
One company seems to have been cranking out the sequels:

http://www.ufo-aftershock.com/pages/features.html
http://www.ufo-afterlight.com/pages/features.html
There are a ton more too. This one is FREE!

Another one, but looks like you have to pay for this one:
http://www.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/
They even made one for Gameboy Advanced:
http://rebelstar.namco.com/
Then you even have remakes of the original (edit: this is the original it looks like):

I think I've found about all of them (I think), but it seems X-COM has not died over the years.

'UFO: Alien Invasion' is a great game. It's still beta, but it's a very good beta.

Didn't really like UFO invasion. You can't destroy walls and other scenery (yet), and the aliens don't look nearly as creepy as those in UFO Defense. It's got promise, and it's the best remake so far, but it needs more work for me to seriously give it a try.

X-Com is not X-Com without destructable terrain - that is have the tactics - make your own path to a target so as to avoid crossfire.
Crazy - can't play that game like that!

Managed to put my hands on the first 3 XCOM games again.
Hell, who needs a remake when the originals are so great, even after more then 10 years Enemy Unknown is still the best strategy game out there. Although i admit i liked APOC a lot more 10 years ago.

They really hit gold with that game, yes.
X-Com is not X-Com without destructable terrain - that is have the tactics - make your own path to a target so as to avoid crossfire.Exactly. I have fond memories of an operation where aliens were holed up in a two-storey barn across an open field and shot several of my soldiers as they tried to approach. I decided to have every one of my men who was able to throw grenades at the building - through windows, onto the roof, and at the walls, while advancing towards it. Awesomeness, except from the fact that objects stay up even though you blow up their foundations (the second storey of a house, for example, will hover in the air even though the first storey has been blasted away completely).
Oh, and when you get the Blaster Launcher, things really turn nasty:o.
Hell, who needs a remake when the originals are so greatThe original X-Com, awesome though it is, has a number of bugs, glitches, and general annoyances. There are no hot keys, for example, and you have to distribute weapons and equipment to your squad before every tactical mission - the game doesn't 'remember' what goes where. You also can't access the stats of a unit from the Inventory screen, which is annoying when equipping them before missions.
My biggest gripe with the game, though, is that in the middle and late game I tend to have only Blaster Launchers, Heavy Plasma, and the occassional stun grenade launcher thingie, coupled with psi-amps and alien grenades. The Heavy Plasma is so overpowered that it's the only real weapon you need apart from the other two I mentioned, and you get it so early in the game laser weapons are never really worth researching. As a consequence, research, or at least Heavy Plasma research, should take longer, or the Heavy Plasma should be nerfed. Or both.
I know some of these were fixed by Terror from the Deep, and others by mods and external programs, and the game's awesome anyway, but they're a bit annoying nonetheless.
