From a discussion in another thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119037), I got to wondering what everyone is seeing for Sh4 performance.

And, most usefully (as I'm a database engineer by trade, and so like to mine for data), give hints as to which hardware performs better in Sh4 (Intel vs AMD, nVidia vs ATI, etc).

So, without further ado, the test! It's modelled off the most difficult framerate I've seen in the game, so should serve as a great benchmark. To duplicate this test:

Tool

Download and install Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/).
Start this up, and map it to a key combo you do not use in-gameVideo Options

Resolution of 1280x960 or 1280x1024
Set "anti-aliasing" in your control panel to "4x" (and make sure it is 'forced' or 'override' - the 'enhance' or 'application setting' values do nothing)
Set "anisotropic filtering" to 16x
Set whatever other quality sliders there are to "Highest Quality" (except V-sync, you can - and should, for testing - leave that off)
Check all boxes in-game, and max out all in-game graphics quality sliders.Performance Test

Start a new patrol in Pearl, default settings (Dec 9, 1941, etc) in a Gato.
Set a series of waypoints going counter-clockwise around the island and ultimately out of the harbor.
Set your sub to follow them at 1/3 throttle
Make sure you are hearing sounds, and also turn on the radio tuned to a station you have audio files for.
Switch to external view, and zoom the camera ALL the way out
Finally, hold down the left or right arrow key while in camera navigation mode (you want to move the camera, not the sub's rudder! ) Anyway, just leave the camera spinning around the sub - put a weight on the arrow key or something
Hit the hotkey to start FRAPS recording, and let it run for 5 min!Anyway, post your 'average', 'min', and 'max' scores, and the system that got them! As this only takes 5 minutes, the particularly thorough will run the test 3 times and average the results.

For example, me:
CPU: Athlon64 X2 '4400+' (dual-core, 1mb-cache-per-core, 2.2ghz)
Video: Radeon X1950 Pro 512mb
RAM: 2gb (1024mb x 2) dual-channel OCZ DDR500
Audio: Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer
Min: 12 fps
Avg: 18.8 fps
Max: 22 fps

Rodan54:
CPU: Intel Pentium IV 3.06 Ghz
Video: Nvidia 7800 GS 256 Mb
RAM: 1 Gb (512 Mb x 2) DDR333
Audio: Creative SB Audigy 2
Min: 6.4 fps
Avg: 12.1 fps
Max: 15 fps

Dunno if I'll go through all that trouble.. but the In game FPS meter usually says like 150-300 FPS for me, hehe

Rarely does it drop low at all... only around Islands with crazy traffic

Eh, well you peaked my interest, and seeing as I have nothing better to do........:88)
Anywho, here are my system specs, followed by fps.

CPU - Intel Pentium IV 3.06 Ghz
GPU - Nvidia 7800 GS 256 Mb
RAM - 1 Gb (512 Mb x 2) DDR333
SC - Creative SB Audigy 2

Min - 6.4
Max - 15
Avr - 12.1

Oh, and I ran through the test five times, just to be thorough.

I'm also running a couple graphics mods, but as far as I can tell they don't really impact performance much, if at all.

Thanks! Hope you don't mind, I editted your results into the first post. I'd like to keep track of any trends or anything with these test results - this could be really useful information! Especially to anyone on the boards looking at new hardware! At the moment, I'm suspecting the game favors Intel/nVidia over AMD/ATI, so it'll be interesting to see more numbers roll in. (I'd be very interested, especially, in a GeForce 7900GS comparison)

I dont even really want to know what my actual FPS are. My game runs and looks fine (shrug).

Good luck with your contest though.

Just a note: you want to hit frap's benchmarking hotkey, not the recording one.

Recording will place a strain on the processor that can affect some systems a lot, and others not as much, skewing the results.

will be heading home in a couple minutes, will do the test there and post the results when I get home.

I'll be doing it on those settings you have and on the lowest of low settings, to get a good idea.

I'd be interested in that test, too - and what settings you use. I was thinking of running a test with 1024x768, no AA, no AF, in-game settings on 'low'. That way, I could meaningfully get my integrated graphics solutions into the mix (my system has a Radeon Xpress200 integrated, and my wife's laptop is a GeForce 6150 - would certainly be some interesting additional data points!).

Well, I tried it with settings on full 4x AA and 16x AF at 1440x900 on max.

min: 9
Average: 12
Max: 16

On low settings, but AA and AF on at 1440x900:
min: 15
Ave: 20
max: 25
(rough estimates cause I'm trying to remember it from home...they weren't high...but you could play it)

And I'll try those extra low settings, however it may look odd on my monitor (16:10 aspect ratio)
