From a discussion in another thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119037), I got to wondering what everyone is seeing for Sh4 performance.
And, most usefully (as I'm a database engineer by trade, and so like to mine for data), give hints as to which hardware performs better in Sh4 (Intel vs AMD, nVidia vs ATI, etc).
So, without further ado, the test! It's modelled off the most difficult framerate I've seen in the game, so should serve as a great benchmark. To duplicate this test:
Tool
Download and install Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/).
Start this up, and map it to a key combo you do not use in-gameVideo Options
Resolution of 1280x960 or 1280x1024
Set "anti-aliasing" in your control panel to "4x" (and make sure it is 'forced' or 'override' - the 'enhance' or 'application setting' values do nothing)
Set "anisotropic filtering" to 16x
Set whatever other quality sliders there are to "Highest Quality" (except V-sync, you can - and should, for testing - leave that off)
Check all boxes in-game, and max out all in-game graphics quality sliders.Performance Test
Start a new patrol in Pearl, default settings (Dec 9, 1941, etc) in a Gato.
Set a series of waypoints going counter-clockwise around the island and ultimately out of the harbor.
Set your sub to follow them at 1/3 throttle
Make sure you are hearing sounds, and also turn on the radio tuned to a station you have audio files for.
Switch to external view, and zoom the camera ALL the way out
Finally, hold down the left or right arrow key while in camera navigation mode (you want to move the camera, not the sub's rudder! ) Anyway, just leave the camera spinning around the sub - put a weight on the arrow key or something
Hit the hotkey to start FRAPS recording, and let it run for 5 min!Anyway, post your 'average', 'min', and 'max' scores, and the system that got them! As this only takes 5 minutes, the particularly thorough will run the test 3 times and average the results.
For example, me:
CPU: Athlon64 X2 '4400+' (dual-core, 1mb-cache-per-core, 2.2ghz)
Video: Radeon X1950 Pro 512mb
RAM: 2gb (1024mb x 2) dual-channel OCZ DDR500
Audio: Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer
Min: 12 fps
Avg: 18.8 fps
Max: 22 fps
Rodan54:
CPU: Intel Pentium IV 3.06 Ghz
Video: Nvidia 7800 GS 256 Mb
RAM: 1 Gb (512 Mb x 2) DDR333
Audio: Creative SB Audigy 2
Min: 6.4 fps
Avg: 12.1 fps
Max: 15 fps
