View Full Version : Forgive me for I have sinned...

Its been some time since my last confession. While playing 100% realism on very hard, I died and re-loaded my campaign.
I couldnt bring myself to accept the death because it just didnt seem right. I was submerged on silent running moving away from a distant warship contact that appeared to be tracking me from way beyond the horizon.
After sometime at high time compression and silent running below the thermocline my sonar officer lost passive sound contact. So I surfaced at high time compression to find myself under attack by two small escorts...perhaps subchasers, i couldnttell because it was at night.
I dont know if it was the distant surface contact that magically caught up tp me or if I just happened to surface into one of those sitting/sleeping mini-taskforces. My sonar officer never picked them up it seems, or they found me even at silent running under the thermocline even after I was silent running and had change course.
Either way it just didnt seem right, either they snuck in without me hearing them or I had the amazing bad luck of surfacing into a sitting taskforce...which doesnt seem right either. I cant imagine a single or group of warships would just sit out in the middle of the ocean...well they were actually they were 50nm of the coast.....but still!!! come on, that just sucks!
Anyway, please forgive me sub-warfare gods!

*shrug*
If I get nuked I usually load up the last time I was in port and go from there. Had to reload a few times in GWX...convoys are nasty...

yeah, but I tend to approach this as a role-play, so when I die Im supposed to start over. Im just feeling a bit guilty because Im kind of side-stepping my own rules...maybe Im being to much of a prude about it :)

Say it with me:
"IT'S A GAME! SAVES ARE THERE FOR A REASON!" :D

Saves are there for TDCs. Some of us play Dead Is Dead because we want to sweat. If it's just a game to you, that's fine, but I won't repeat after you.:p
So I surfaced at high time compression...
That's a mortal sin right there. So, no forgiveness this time.:rotfl:
Or, in the words of the old joke:
Me: "Doc, it hurts when I do this."
Doctor: "Don't do that!"
AS penance, I think you should take on a Heavy Cruiser (at least) with your deck gun. Only then will your concious truly be cleansed. And this time it won't be in accelerated time so you can watch the action :hmm: .
Go forth and surface in compressed time no more
Cheers!

I excommunicate you!
I'm afraid you're a couple years too late :rotfl:

Oh, I figured that since we gave differing opinions, you would excommunicate me as well; just like the 12th-century popes.
Actually Steve--both of our opinions were an attemp to bring a suffering sailor out of virtual purgatory. Since both of our goals were pure, neither of us need go back to PBS (Popes before Subs). I feel we were each offering a relief to an issue of unresolved emotional and spiritual distress.
I think we are actually on the same page here.

It's an advantage is saving, so you use it if you want to!!! I'm a subsim aetheist and have no such qualms about reloading a save if it all goes wrong, so don't go subscribing to the hardcore simmers dogma!!!

*Applauds enthusiastically and sympathetically*;)
I see we need to Exorcize the "Demon of Restarting Saved Games" here.
*Where'd I put my holy water?"
Fear naught! for this demon has been expelled before.
There's a way out of this heart-rending dilema that works for me: "But I have to restart so I can see that! I had external view disabled!"

would someone excommunicate me cuz i've never done that before:-?
My son's,
There's no greater sin then the penance we place upon once self, the fact you came clean on this forum is penance it self and therefore is forgiven.
My understanding of our holy bible is that we all ******* up some time and almighty up there always seems to forgive us some how and when that doesn’t help a flood always does the trick. (Good for business so to speak)
Going to save this thread and go home now to start up my Computer to finish a very prosperous patrol I started 3day’s a go.
Kill list is growing steadily, sure hope the State Department isn't going to send me to early retirement this time or I’ll send the a 20m wooden crate with you know what inside. (Don’t want to have it explode early.. does any one have a s*** load of cotton some were I can use to secure the torp for transport?)

When are people going to learn? God doesn't give a monkeys about us lot down here, hence the reason he gave us free will!!

No, free will shows he does care about what we do. Since we have a choice, what we do is an indication of who we are, are priorities and weither not we place his expectations at the forefront of our daily existence, interactions/relationships with others.
Free will means we can either choose him or choose not to. Those who choose him are chosen back :)
Silent Running does not mean you are "silent" or undetectible. The button is not a starship cloaking shield. Neither is the layer. Even with both you can be tracked and attacked. If you have a visual contact through the scope or a sound contact, they cannot be "over the horizon" in this game though you can hear contacts beyond visual range. Just as you can hear them, there is a chance they can also hear you.

Behold for I am Njord! God of the sea and you are in my domain! Your petty popes will cower to the mighty storms I will batter your boats with. Fear me for my wrath and beg for mercy.
Those that give offerings of IJN warships and merchants shall be SAVED! Those who perish in my domain will be given a second chance (and a third, forth, fifth depending on how much of a noob you are.)
But those who refuse my offer and join me for eternity will reach valhala! (only to be sent away and reborn as yet another skipper)

They were identified as being at long range, thats atleast 10km i believe as mentioned in the manual. They were heading in at high and then medium speeds from long range. I seriously doubt they'd be able to detect me deep under the layer, silent running at 2kts from over 10km using passive sonar in 41. Even if they keyed in on my last bearing, or assuming they did better and they solved for my track and speed to intercept, they still would have been miles away on a differnet course and speed by the time they got there.
I tend to believe the ships I ran into were ships sitting and sleeping at the location I surfaced. The standard speed ascent and surface may have certainly gotten the attention of an alerted crew, but Ive read of subs doing much more amoungst a convoy at night...granted the escorts were underway.
I can accept the idea of a sitting hunter-killer grouping getting the jump on me, but Im not sure i accept the idea that a hunter-killer group would be sitting stationary, engines off in a combat zone. I cant accept the hunter-killer group was from a distant location that magically homed in on me under the conditions. British passive sonar wasnt even that good at that point in the war.
