How does one use the type XXI?

Basically I remember in Aces of the Deep, you could fire an eel from 50m and up just by using the sonar. I don't see anything on how this is done in this game. How does one ID your target underwater?

Now I am not to this point yet, but I am hoping that one day I will get it and don't want to be nailed at the end of the war by needing to use my scope.

I've used the XXI a bit, but if you want to make accurate shots, you're going to need to use the scope.

If you've got some acoustic torps in your boat, then you can rely on some of the less accurate methods, but you're not going to get a lot of those, and they're better used for anti-ASW.
