View Full Version : kamikaze destroyers?

I haven't played much, but last night I went after a convoy. This was my first time playing with manual targeting, man it is hard! So I fire off one shot to a merchant, it misses wildly but luckily hits another merchant. My next shot is good and hits the intended merchant. A third misses only slightly and around this point I have two destroyers bearing down on me.

They DC me and I start sinking. I must say the damage model is great - it's awesome to see a DC slam your propeller and then hear "propeller damaged!" right on cue. I start sinking uncontrollably since I'm not moving, so I figure my dive planes might get me out of this mess. Amazingly, only while traveling at 2/3 or better do I gain depth - any slower and I'm sinking. I try to hobble out of there, I take another DC right to the propeller - it comes apart and I hear "propeller destroyed!" At this point I have to blow ballast.

I surface, knowing I'm a dead man, so I start shooting destroyers with my deck gun. I managed to destroy two destroyers. With my deck gun? No - with good solid american boat engineering. The two destroyers crash into my boat on their pass and are subsequently destroyed. If it hadn't been for a third destroyer doing enough damage from afar with its guns, I might have actually lived. It was funny but I thought it was a little odd that A.) they would hit me like that and B.) be destroyed so easily as a result.

Yeah DDs do that sometimes, never fails to amuse me that, your sub can't take too many DC hits yet a DD at full speed can ram you and blow up!!!

Yes, DDs seem to have a weak spot along their hull bottom. It's possible
that the hit points there are low or maybe not at all. Some modders that
do ship hit points and sinking abilities need to see if they can find the cause
and do a mod. None of the official patches seemed to address it...

The same thing happens in SHIII and that is just from hitting the conning tower. If I chose to do so I could swim along just under the surface and take out any number of DDs that were bothering me. Obviously this is a cheat of sorts so I tried to avoid this happening. Sometimes I waited too long to submerge and to the bottom a DD would go.

DDs do provide some comic relief now and again. Just yesterday I was on a patrol and got harassed by a small TF. Two DDs and a Subchaser. Got cought whilst not paying enough attention whilst racing to intercept a convoy in the East China Sea (early '45).

After crash-diving, I got pounded with DCs. As I was looking in external view, one of the DDs actually slowed to a near stop just after releasing a DC (from a sidemount). And it blew up right under his propellers :D

Fire ensued, and it startet to take in water astern. Eventually just sitting there with the stern more or less submerged. Shame I couldn't go topside and finish it up.

It's when they crash into your periscope and blow up that makes me laugh hardest, I can imagine the report to high command now. We lost 2 Destroyers to periscope collisions yesterday.
