If the leaks I've heard about are true, he does kinda die but then comes back again.

Quite a few secondary characters die though.

Never read any of the books and saw a guy yesterday (Swiss speaking french to boot) with a t-shirt that said (in english) "Who the f#*# is Harry Potter?" ...the symbols were not there by the way. :rotfl:

I wish Harry Poter did die. I'm sick of hearing about it. The fact he is alive still in this latest book tells me that there is a chance that another damn book will be written, and this means, I might have to hear about it again! :)

Harry Potter isn't dead, literature is dead, as evidenced by all the adults who have such a low reading age, that this kind of children's book is all they can get enthusiastic about.

I'm willing to bet that when JK Rowling needs a new house or swimming pool or whatever, she will trot out more of this stuff, so fear not HP fans. And since the whole book is based around magic, that does not preclude him from coming back to life, or regressing to be a child again, or re-incarnating or anything else that will keep the cash cow on its feet. My guess for the next Harry Potter book title: 'Harry Potter and the Neverending Franchise'.

We are turning into an image based society. I listened to an article about this on the way to work last week. It is pretty bad. Everything is going this way. Nobody reads much at all. Even all our appliances in our house are going towards illiterate - ever figure out why a woman can't figure out how to use your remote control? That is because half the buttons on it are images on the latest versions, instead of writting what they do! Cars no longer write what a switch or button is for, and opt to put an image on it that looks nothing like what it does. In my Land Rover, the cruise control on button looks like a road with something crashing on it! Why couldn't they just write - Cruise Control? My SAAB is the same way. It has images for half of everything in there. Don't even get me started on Ford and Chevy.

Even on computers, it is going that way - pick up the latest Office 2007, and everything you have been used to has been replaced with some half baked image, and you can't do anything anymore! I have 10 copies of Office 2007 Pro, and outside of testing, I do not plan to use it on my home system at all! I'll stick with Office 2003 thanks! I am just kind of curious though as to how Microsoft thinks we are supposed to 'type' a letter on our Word Processor if they think we have no idea how to read in the first place? Maybe it's a highly sophisticated letter like - See Spot run!

They gave examples of McDonalds no longer writing fries on a terminal screen and instead using an image of fries so that all the illegal aliens, and all the employees lacking a formal education can figure out how to order food. It's pathetic! Going towards the third revolution in communication - towards an image based society. Sad.

Anyway, now I am really off subject.

How many HP books have you read?

I read about halfway through the first one, out of curiousity, since I am a writer. After about halfway through I could stand no more, in much the same way as I could hardly be thrilled at the prospect of reading of the adventures of Miss Tiggywinkle now that I am an adult.

It is also apparent to me that it would have had a very slim chance of being published had it not been for JK's connection with publishers too, since it plagiarised from many sources. That said, good luck to her, I haven't really got a problem with her publishing books aimed at children, and it does at least get them reading, which is no bad thing.

But I can't say it doesn't depress me that many adults avidly read them though, when there is such a wealth of literature available that is actually aimed at them.

Well just popped into Tesco do get some food and decided to read the last few pages of Harry Potter. Just in case some people here are reading it I can cofirm thought that there is room for a definite sequel should the need arise or at least a film one should Hollywood feel they don't have enough money in the bank.

brad, calling people jerks who are having a lighthearted talk about it isn't nice.

Generally my feelings towards the HP series are quite good. If they get children reading and interested in reading that can only be to the benefit of society. On the other hand the media whirlwind about it is overwhelming when there are more serious issues in the world which should maybe making headlines.
You can get the Harry Potter books in Latin and ancient greek. Now that is cool.

Yeah I know, but it's kind of like a train wreck on knowing the ending. You don't want to watch it but you do so now I know the ending and I haven't read it yet.

You stopped reading reading just when it started to get good, literally.
I borrowed the book from my daughter because I had nothing to read and thought it was pretty bad. When I read halfway through I went to give it back to my daughter and she suggested I continue on that the first half was bad. The rest is history. :)
Yes the book is aimed at children but a good story is a good story. It got published and both the publisher and JK are both very rich so I don't quite think it was just because of connections.
Why do you have to read literature that is specifically aimed at you? That kind of narrow mindedness don't you think?
I love all sorts of books and it depends on my moods which type I read. My library is pretty cross section but I don't do romance.

I pray not. As for the series yes. Execpt for a 8th book giving a rundown on what everyone did after Hogwarts there is not much to look foward to.

The books aren't bad, I gotta admit Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince had me pretty enthralled, I'll give JK her due, she can write...but she can also spin it out as a money franchise, but then again, aren't we as much to blame for that as she is? I have no doubt that I'll be reading the latest book, just as soon as I prise it out of the other halfs hands.

I've just finished reading Hunters in the Sea by Robin White, and that had me pretty enthralled too, pity they haven't made a film out of Whites books....

lol, NO is the answer to the thread title! The ending was surprisingly good actually. It was easily the best book of the saga (it's the only book I've ever read to page 100 without actually closing it!). I'd reccommend it to anyone, but make sure you've read the other books too otherwise it could get confusing!

Here's how it ends:

Snape kills Hagrid after he tries to save Harry, Voldemort kills Snape AND Hermione, Harry blasts himself and Voldemort into oblivion, Ron just kind of runs off...

Barnes of Noble had it behind the counter, so I took a "peek".

My opinion of Harry Potter

While I cannot claim to have read the Harry Potter books I have seen at least two of the movies. Due to watching these movies I lost any ambition I might have had to read the books.

Now before you say "How could you comment on something that you haven't read?" let me speak/type/ramble. I am a fan of the genre. I have read every single book of Raymond Feist and Robin Hobb, a large pile of David Eddings, another large pile of Robert Jordan and obviously The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Silverthorn.

These (except for the Tolkien books) are books of the genre based for adults but even so the Tolkien books are in many ways obviously superior to the Harry Potter trash. What made me consider Potter as rubbish? Mainly when watching the movies the creativity or lack thereof to be astonding. The words to the spells are so crap and lacking any imagination that I could not contain myself.

The amount of effort other writers put into their worlds becomes clear when comparing it to the Little Golden Book quality that is Harry Potter. Tolkien created an entire language for Elves FFS! Meanwhile Feist has detailed maps, histories and lore that his books follow which is similar to other authors mentioned.

Point of my argument is, Tolkien was based for kids, yet the quality of the story is far above what i've seen Rowling to be. And what is this JK Rowling rubbish? Stop trying to feed off JRR Tolkien. It's great for kids to read (even though LOTR is a better choice) but the adults who read it should really check out some decent fantasy writing.

What? are you sure you were reading the right book? It actually turns out that Snape was on Harry's side all along and Dumbledore had arranged with Snape that he would kill him, yes Voldemort kills Snape but no-one else, he makes Hagrid carry harry's body to everyone else who believe him to be dead but he has come back to life. In the end, Harry kills Voldemort, but apart from that the only people who die are: Hedwig, Dobby, Mad-Eye, Fred Weasley, Lupin, Tonks, Snape and Voldemort (obviously) and a load of other muggles and Death Eaters and random people. Harry marries Ginny Weasley and they have kids (James, Albus and Lily) and Ron marries Hermione who also have a child called Rose. It's kinda hard to explain the whole story, it will all become clear when you read it!

Let me put it this way. I watched part of two HP movies and don't bother anymore. They share the same title and they share "some" events in no particular order. Go to your local library and read one of the books then make an opinion. Not liking a series because they don't have cool magic words is well, kind of odd. But hey, everyone has their thing.

It's more then that but when the movie was on TV it just stood out. I recommend them to kids and they are great for that but I'm not going to bother with it when there are more adult fantasy books around. More blood and gore in the good ones.

Anyone wanting a good series should check out the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. Awesome books.

I finished the last harry potter book yesterday. I thought it was the best of the series.

Somethings I guessed correctly, R.A.B. and that the three main characters would survive and get married to the respective intrestes.

Some I was half right on, The wedding would be interupted ( A wedding and four funerals was the expectation!), that a wesley would die ( I thought it would be Percy!)

Did anybody see the Simpsons episode where they're in England?

Lisa: "Look, mom! It's J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books! Please, Miss Rowling, how does the last book end?"

J.K. Rowling: "Harry grows up, and he marries YOU! Is that what you wanted to hear?"

Lisa: "Oh, yes!"

Rowling (rolling eyes): Oh, no!"
