View Full Version : Freetown...disaster in the making?

I'm on patrol in January 1941, assigned to grid square ET-25. I'm currently about 1,000 km out, having been slowed down by one hell of a tropical storm.

ET-25 is adjacent to Freetown, on the coast of Africa. I've noticed through radio reports that the sucker is swarming with warships...there is a constant line of 10-11 ships sailing a north-south route just outside the port.

It's tempting to go in and see if I can't find something worth a torpedo, but as this is my first experience with GWX, the alarm bells are going off. Anybody patrolled near this area in GWX before?

I have patrolled close to that area and thought about going in there. There were about 8-10 destroyers running about there.

Decided it would probably be suicide.........:yep:

Am assigned to ET26, so I will try to sneak into the harbour. Only 500km to go. I will keep you updated, if I'll return home.

Ran smack into a convoy while I was enroute for a harbor penetration...lookouts didn't see a thing until a corvette bore down on us.

I had enough time to snapshot two torps at freighter close enough to target, got lucky with one hit. Now I'm deep and giving the escorts a decent chase. Think I'm going to enjoy this area...if I get out of it alive.

i managed to get IN the harbour once... just the ships you would find in other harbours :nope:

not counting the endless patrolling warships (yes i killed almoast 10 of them)

Sneaked past the warships (only small ones, no DDs) and have entered the harbour area. A lot of British merchants, no stationary warships.

1 Liner
1 Large Tanker
1 Modern Medium Tanker
1 Small Tanker
1 Medium Freighter
2 Small Freighter
7 Tramp

I found heaven! I hope they don't have guns installed, so I can spare some torpedoes...

Happy Hunting To Me...

Why go into the port when large, fat convoys come out of there and you have over two weeks to follow that convoy and decimate it? :arrgh!:

Because Mohr is the founder of the Suicide Squad, and lately he has many followers, he is something like the dark side of the force, very tempting... :rotfl: :rotfl:

yes mohr has shown me the light. attacking ports and warships in the daylight with my deckgun is the way to go! good times too. lots of crew casualties though. the bridge on U-123 is not a safe place. i got my crew lined up in the control room. as soon as someone gets blown off the bridge i send another up.

That will happen 25 minutes after hell freezes over. :rotfl:

Got away from the escorts, going to move south another 7 or 8,000 meters before surfacing. One tramp steamer down, convoy is continuing on course due west. The night is young...going to end-around and charge into the flanks for a night surface attack. Y'all oughta join me out here...things are going to get sporty

I have unfortunatly lost my navigator, WO and CE on my first patrol. Second patrol I lost my XO and the new WO. Things are getting dicey out there.

When you offered me the job, your WO used to get a one way ticked at the base, that's why!!!:rotfl:
You never told me you were going to call the WO in before a combat begins!! :shifty:

Caught 'em with their pants down. Surfaced, approached the convoy with a half-moon behind me, not an escort in sight. A spread of four torps yielded three hits...two large cargos down, 12,000 tons each. That's three out of this convoy thus far. Am moving behind the convoy for an approach on the other side while I reload the tubes.

GWX just rocks. And Freetown is my new favorite hunting ground. :|\\

Kpt. Mohr...I imagine that whenever a new crewman gets assigned to your boat, he feels somewhat like a Star Trek extra...

Apologies if you don't get it :rotfl:

Seriously though, when I run out of torps...four bow shots left...I might just punch out a few parting shells, if only to drive the escorts mad :arrgh!:

what you mean with the star trek thing ?
dont u have a WW2 term to use for that ?

Lol I tried freetown once, thought better of it. Not only were there about a dozen DD's patrolling the area there were lots of PT boats which are just a pain in the ass because they're so quick they are on you before your WO even see's them! Unlike Mohr I'm a bit wary of harbours, my tactics are not suicidal and are best in the middle of the atlantic lol.

Btw...like my new sig? Made it in about 5 minutes on photoshop :D

On old Star Trek shows, any extra, or special guest star, in an episode was always killed off.

I guess the WW2 term would be "cannon fodder" :rotfl:

Yeah, the thing I like about it, is that the text fits in perfectly. Its a bit rough around the edges so to speak which makes it look great against the old style grainy picture.

Turns out I have a Bernard on my boat. Unluckily for me he's the sonarman. Told me the scope was clear...I checked it myself and discovered two DDs boring in at me from short range :nope:
