Finnish researchers from the Universities of Tampere and Turku have identified a previously unknown mechanism that could be responsible for the onset of cancer.
A team under the leadership of academic researcher Jukka Westermarck has isolated a protein that causes healthy cells to become cancerous. The discovery may lead to new possibilities for the treatment of cancer.
The results of the study indicate that basic biomedical research focusing on the mechanism behind the onset of cancer could highlight completely new agents that have a critical impact on the advancement of cancer.
The results of the research were published today in the international science journal, Cell. Only five original studies from Finland have been accepted for publication in the journal.
