Yes... I know its heresy, but I've never watched Das Boot. I want to order it online, but am unsure as to which version to get? I want the best one (obviously lol), anyone able to point me in the right direction?

thats what i've got... and i agree. makes for a long movie night but crack open a case of cold ones and sit back and relax... $50 says you rush to play SH3 before the intermission :rotfl:

You should buy this version.....I have the director's cut and the uncut version....

The uncut version has a lot more nuance to it, if you can spare the extra buck, buy it, you will not be disappointed.

the directors cut is 200 mins long or 3hours 20 mins (tis the one i have ) not seen the uncut version...saving up for it :up:

I'm sorry to have to say this, but I pity all the people that have a copy of Das Boot movie and cannot understand the German language.

Yesterday I was in a funny mood and watched the movie in German language and with english subtitles on.

I nearly fell off my chair, because it was so ridiculous.
I don't know who was responsible for making the english subtitles, but this guy should be keelhauled for many times, maybe a lifetime long.

Not only that the translation lacks the fine tone of humour in the dialogue between the crew members, but many times the dialogue is translated SOOOOOO wrong that you even miss out on important things.

Seems to me that they grabbed a student that was capable of speaking both languages and put him in front of a telly:

Company:"Hey, you guy, watch that movie and translate it on the fly, you got five hours to do it!"
Student:"But I don't know anything about naval movies and this thing called u-boat."
Company:"Doesn't matter at all. Just keep on translating. Oh, and you can leave out all the passages you don't understand. We'll fix that later..."

Of course this is only how it could have been then... ;)

I like the movie Das Boot mainly for its subtle dialogue.
Well, the action is good, too, but the dialogue really makes it a killer!!! :rock:

Are the subtitles for Das Boot really appauling though? I understand a little bit of German but not a great deal unfortunatly, would love to pick it up though, shame I didn't pick it up for A level.

I have 'snatched' Das Boot from TV, twice; once in Full Screen and once in Wide Screen. Now, I have the Un-Cut, Two DVD version.

"Infinitely" better. Now.. things I have seen often...make sense. Further, I have the SPOKEN choices of German or English, stereo or '5.1'. Subtitles in English, French {I think I remember seeing it there}... or the Ever-Popular "NONE".

I might add that the English 'Spoken' is the best 'running translation' of ANY I have heard, in ANY movie...

Watch it enough and you'll slowly get the gist.

Or go to Germany and stay with an exchange partner...did that twice, I love Germany. My German is more military though...I blame gaming and movies lol.


Band of Brothers is the Das Boot of the European war.

Das boot rocks, and the English voice over version....shizer...lol.

But I remember watching it with my old man, he says the book is really good aswell. I can rememember his on the Bridge screaming "Faster, faster, faster!"

But a sentence like 'April, april, Ubung ist das halbe Leben, nur kein Moos ansetzen' might be difficult to translate correctly...

As one who speaks three (3) languages fluently... English, Filthy, and Obscene... *I* think the translation is fine! Besides the accuracy... good or bad, the 'dubbing in' of the English remains as smooth as I have ever seen... period.

Maybe it has something to do with the movie rating system in America.
I think they didn't translate some of the jokes in order to get a bigger audience.

There are some errors that really are unforgivable.....

At one time, when U-99 gets ready to conduct to make its attack run on the surface they call "UZO auf Brucke"...the translation in dutch is: Underwater objective on the bridge.....wtf....an underwater objective on the bridge during a surface attack....you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about....just google the word UZO and within a couple of seconds it will be clear that the UZO is not something you use underwater....and that the translation is false.

In English at least they translate it as "Master Sight". One funny thing I noticed from the little German I understand is that the Director's Cut actually has better subtitles. "Mann auf brucke?" is a direct "Man on bridge?", rather than the Uncut version's "Permission to come up?".

I think that the uncut version was translated directly from the book and the director's cut was a translation directly from the German movie language.

In the Dutch book it is also translated "Permission to come up?".

I agree with many of the previous posts - I also have the director's cut and uncut versions, and would recommend the uncut version. It is shot in more 'real time' and feels more realistic.
