I run it with 1GB and it goes fine, but I'd go with 2GB if you can or even more. Though it will take a while to load stuff with 1GB, you'll want to set your virtual memory/page file to around 3GB to make sure it doesn't run out on you.

how do i do that?

If you're running XP you go to control panel, system, then click on the Advanced tab then click performance then advanced, virtual memory, then choose custom size, then set the maximum AND minimum to 3000. You might have to restart your machine after you set it. As for Vista I've no idea, though I imagine it's similar. Hope that sorts you out, if you still aren't sure just ask!

If you mean physical ram then that's 1GB, if you are on about the paging file or virtual memory you'll need to set it higher.

Also, Make sure volmetric fog is switched off, this is a FPS killer.

nothing has changed, is it normal for the game to crash whenever you look at the wrecks at pearl harbour?

Nice Tip orangenee  Forgot all about that even tho I don't have any probs. Have 2 gigs of ram and fairly hi end vid card and cpu and 700 watts of power to keep it juiced. :D I'm going to check it out . THX again.

That the game runs choppy seldomly has anything to do with RAM (memory). If the game skips and runs choppy that is generally a graphical issue. You either have to turn down the details (such as turn off environmental effects, volumetric fog and such things) or buy yourself a better graphic card.
RAM (memory) usually affects loading times. Starting the game, saving and loading and also cacheing models and sometimes textures. If your game runs fine while looking in one direction and once you look another direction it skips and runs choppy for a while and then goes back to running fine once it has loaded the new textures, then THAT's a memory issue. In your case, one more slab of 1 Gb RAM and a new graphic card would alleviate most of your problems. Of course, a weak CPU (processor) would be the bottleneck in that case.
Go to some good hardware store and have a chat with a technician. They can usually help a lot and make you understand better what different parts of the computer do.

hello i was wondering will silent hunter 4 run the same with 1GB RAM as it would with 2GB RAM?
Simple answer is no. If your system is a lower end system and only has 1 GIG of RAM, you need to do everything possible to allow SH4 to run smoothly.
Defrag your Hard Drive. Disable anti virus and any unnecessary background programs before running the game. Within the game, disable the event camera and volumetric fog. Set your graphics to medium rather than High. :D

Exactly what I did with my system, Mahai :D I have a mid range system with a P4 3.0 processor, a GeForce 7600GT 256MB video card and I upgraded to 2 GIGs of RAM.
I don't have Volumetric fog enabled, but other than that, I run the game with all graphics set to 'High' and decent AA and AF. Silent Hunter 4 runs like a dream on my mid range rig.

I began with with a 3200+/1 gig RAM/ATI X1300 and the game play well. Choppy at times and high TC was a struggle. I went up to 2 gigs RAM and the choppy went away. The music repeating as my hard drive grinded away to get me to the next view stopped. Any extra RAM seems to help in playability. My FPS did not just up much but playability of going from view to view and TC sure did.
