Ok... I cracked and the wife was fed up with the cursing coming from the office.. I bought a new system tonight.

After Silent Hunter III Grey Wolves Mod crashed to desktop tonight three times the house agreed that I should not wait until November. You should know that with SHIII with GWX a single saved game takes 4 minutes to LOAD!!!!!!! I've been known to have a quick shower as I load a game. Pathetic I know. NO LONGER!

Here are my new specs. Please know that my family is NOT wealthy but I was able to get it for $1051.00

I'll upgrade to 2 GIG memory by Christmas.

Will SHIV run well?

Let's look at what I currently have and then what is coming...

I just upgraded to a core2dua machine.

Before that, I played SH4 with a AMD 2600+, 1 gig ram, and radeon 9800 pro, and I was suprised how well it played. Slow to load games, and a little choppy in TC. But I played with many of the settings set to at least medium at 1024.

Your "before" machine looks better than my old one, FWIW.

Your new machine will rock, it's very similar to the one I use now.

Snakeeyes, looks to be a very good machine. Better than mine and I can play SHIII and 4 with no problems. I'm still running a p4 3.2E CPU with 2 gigs of DDR RAM and an XFX 6800XT 256mb 256bit card. Yours will even run FSX with very good framrates and no problems.

First thing i looked for was System Ram and Video card.

With the upgrades Yes SH4 will run fine! In fact it will run fine with everything turned up and resolution of 1280x1024 or probably higher. :D

So I guess saving for my Athlon 64 X2 4800+, 2GB DDR2-800 Ram, NFORCE4M-A MB, Geforce 8800GTS is not necissary? It'll be overkill for SHIV?

Overkills a good thing plus it'll last you a good couple of years.

No, thats not overkill. With AA and AF enabled at high resolutions even that system will struggle at times.

I run the game at max settings in 1280x1024 with 8x AA and experiences pretty decent frames in heavy combat, but still low figures in port.

It will run just fine.I have something similar - Core2Duo E6600,2Gigs of RAM and x1900XT and I go in 1280x1024,everything maxed except of volumetric fog + 6xFSAA - you will be satisfied, enjoy your new rig:up:

I run mine on a nintendo game cube;) . No really, I bumped by rig up to 2 gigs and it made a world of difference. AMD 3200+ and ATI 1300 512mb card. Decent frames that seemed to have gotten better with 1.3. You'll be good with what you purchased.

The RAM is seriously lacking. In order of desirability (and performance), from best to worst:

- 2 x 1GB
- 1 x 2GB
- 2 x 512MB
- 1 x 1GB

As you can see, you single 1GB module choice is the worst possible as far as RAM is concerned. You should really try to upgrade even more in that area. I for one would shave quite a few $$s off of pointless gadgets such as tiny LCDs and lights in the case. Getting neons instead of RAM is like getting a spoiler for a bulldozer.

Hey guys. Made a few changes and got the 8800 GTS along with updating my RAM to 2 GIG in 2x 1 Gig pieces. All I can do now is wait. My gaming 'puta pretty much died on me last week and with it my SHIII Grey Wolves campaign I was in. ****. Well, at least I got the campaign off on the flash drive before everything went to hell. I'm going to kick off SHIV with all the patches for the first time probably early next month. This wait is killing me.

Ok, the 7950 is one of nVidia's best cards to date. But it will not do DirectX 10, only 9.0c. Not a big thing as neither SH4 nor Windows XP will support Dx10 anyways.

But if you plan to buy other new games as well as upgrade to Vista in the near future, you'll want a Dx10 compatible videocard (there's a demo on subsim for pt-boats that show cases the difference between 9.0c and 10. You'll want 10 after seeing that). Look at the new ATI card or a nVidia 8800GTS for a good Dx10 card that will not gobble up all your cash like an 8800GTX or Ultra.
