Forgive me if this has already been discussed...

Is there a consensus on the quality differences between Vista and XP for SH4?

I ask because I'm seeing terrible performance in Vista, with all effects off, with standard and latest beta drivers, and before I go through the hassle of reinstalling XP etc., I wanted to make sure that I would be able to expect proper performance of SH4 on XP.

I have a decent box, 7800 GTX, X-fi etc., 2 GB RAM, so I don't understand why I'm seeing so many problems. Any ideas, comments feedback? Anybody downgraded from Vista to XP for SH4 and seen great improvements?

Otherwise I'll be shelving SH4, much to my chagrin.

Thanks in advance,

If you have already had to jump thru vista's hoops to get it worken I wouldn't waste your time going to xp. Do you have the Nvidia Control Panel for your overclocking needs ?

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know exactly what you mean by that, I've set the Nvidia control panel to use the best settings possible, forced AA etc., and use minimal effects in the game, but serious stuttering....and then trippy colours.

I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest drivers...

Don't remember seeing this on XP.

The stuttering is caused by the frame taking too long to be rendered by the video card (meaning the game is throwing too much at the card and it can't take it). I've cleared it away by removing the AA from the driver and using high graphics in the game (all on except the Full scene Glare).

This is on XP SP2, 91.31 driver, 2 gb, 7800 GS+ and getting 40+ fps outside with no stutter.

OK, right, I'll try that then.... thanks for the tip.

Very similar setup here and no stuttering.
Vista 32 and a 8800gtx with FPS of 75 and all the settings on max no stuttering oh and a E6600 OCed to 3.2 Ghz

Hi

Try turning your virus scanner off (and disconnect from the internet while it is off). Virus scanners are both memory hungry and CPU hungry. Maybe it is running a scan of some sort, while you play the game.

Secondly, do you have a performance issue in Vista in general or only when you play Sh4?

Have no problems here running sh4 on vista ultimate x64, silky smooth frame rates on my 8800gtx. I can safely say the game plays better for me now than it ever did on xp32

Btw I'm using the latest nvidia beta drivers, 163.11, although I believe you would need a modified inf to get them installed on gf7 or lower vid cards, if you wanted to give them a try

Thanks to all above, I've had a good game this afternoon, no problem - well apart from running out of diesel.

I have no idea what was causing it on Saturday, maybe a reboot or two....looking good, but need a couple of those mods first. But better, looking better.

Thanks again, happy hunting.

I've got a 2.52gHz P4, 1gb PC800-40 RDRAM, and a 256mb 7800 GS OC.

I run the game on Custom Graphics, everything turned on except Volumetric Fog, Post Proc Filter, and....I can't remember if there was another one I don't use. I've also got all other settings, except Gamma, turned as high as they can go.

I've bumped up my virtual page file on my drive to over 3gb, just in case. And I'm running on 4xAA and 4xAF.

I can run a solid 30+fps outside, 20+fps outside when moving around with the free camera, and it barely dips below 20, except on high TC, near convoys (and the like), and when moving the camera around a bunch.

No major stuttering, though, and I've got a realitively old build (save the new PSU and GPU I've installed).

sorry to say that, but for the guy who started this thread, such a hardware is completely irelevant. Micky, you do have a high-end PC and as such, it's clearly out of stuttering and couldn't be, vista or anything...

Now, Vista on "slower" rigs have been reported to play games (especially not directx 10 specific) sometimes slower and even by an order of magnitude.

I for myself, use SH4 on xp - 2gb ram, PIV 3ghz and an "old" X800 pro, 1280x1024, AA 2x, Anisotropic 2 to 4x and all graphical options set to on, except fog and i get something like 22-27 fps external cam, 45-55 inside sub.

Tell me how is yours compared to that, might help as it should be somewhat higher i believe.

Similar system I just have to wait for a few when increasing TC up to 512. After a few it smoothes out and not a problem after that.
