Was it in heavy seas? I've been getting contacts lost on two digit bearings in heavy seas...

The sonar model in SH4 is more complex than a lot of people imagine. Plus, when a DD shuts down his engines to listen for you, you wil lose contact in all but the best conditions.

Sober, I believe you're sober,

I just don't understand your question, that's all.

Maybe you can explain what it is you mean?

yea I just noticed this today. Was pretty cool actually. Really heavy storm, I had no visibility and used sonar to fire a spread of 4 (2 hit). Apparently I crippled my target because it stopped moving. I lost sonar contact. I never got the 'unit destroyed message' and had no idea how to finish him off. I don't ever remember losing contact when a ship stopped moving. This was the first time that happened for me. At least the first time I noticed.

PS I managed to finish the ship off with one more torp. Couldn't see or hear it, but every now and then the huge wave would go down and I could make out a little fire from the distance. I just aimed at that fire and sent a torp straight to it. Lol was pretty cool. That little fire was the only way for me to detect that ship. I had no radar, horrible visibility (big storm lots of rain and night time to boot) and no sonar contact. That was the neatest kill I've gotten in a long time.

When i pressed the button for a hydrophone check instead of a message saying merchant on bearing 282 it comes up with lost on bearing 150 or some other bearing then from then everytime i ask for a hydrophone check it comes up with not on bearing 183 or some other random bearing . I know for a fact that there is a merchant at 282 bearing because i can see it thru the scope .

I'm so buzy trying to get all sort of mods to work with 1.3, I forget to play the game. I have not encounered what you say in 1.3. I did however in 1.2
It happened rarely, and when it happened it had me baffeled, but it did nonetheless.
I know this is not helping, but at least now I knopw what you said.

Couldn't you have used active sonar in that bearing, or does the operator has to "lock" the contact first (which in this case he obviously couln't)
Have you tried?

That's what I thought. I kept pinging the area but I got nothing. The sonar operator wouldn't do anything because he couldn't hear the target. I thought that was kinda f'ed up. Shouldn't I still be able to ping around for the target even if I can't hear it? I was able to ping when I heard the ship. It was a huge storm with massive waves. Could the big waves have kept the target hidden from active sonar? I don't quite understand how it works so...

ps I'm getting a little confused about this thread. I thought he was talking about losing contact because the target stopped.

"...Couldn't see or hear it, but every now and then the huge wave would go down and I could make out a little fire from the distance..."

How about getting closer when you know there is something there and see if your phones pick them up. Try experimenting with depth and profile.
