View Full Version : Starting Rank Question
Hi Guys
Is there anyway of starting your career as a Oberleutnant or Kapitanleuntant
as its not to realistic starting a career in 1939 as commander of a uboat as
a leutnant zur see and you chief LI outranks you!!!. I have been trying to edit
a few files but to no avail through both SH3 commander and the SH3 engine anybody know if this is possible. I can chage the dates of the promotions through
the personell file config but if you were still a letnant zur see in 1939 and you joined up in 1932 you must off been last in you r class to still have this rank let
alone commanding a uboat.
Any ideas ?

there was a lengthy post about this a while back.
Appears that it actually IS somewhat historically accurate that your chief or another officer on the boat would technically "outrank" the commander, however full authority as to the operation of the boat rests with the commander of the boat.
I believe you can change the level of renown you have in a cfg file and suddenly get a promotion to Kaleun... but you really have to earn those promotions over time.
With Sh3 commander i have never once had an officer onboard my boat who outranked me. you can adjust their ranks but not your own.
hang in there and sink ships, you will be promoted by the third patrol with any luck.
you can adjust ranks with SH3 Commander too. Very easy.

Sure, but that's only for your crew, not your own.... wouldn't be nice if a feature to modify your own rank could be implemented for SH3 Commander?  ;)

I wish there was an option in SH3 Commander where you could edit your medals. I find GWX seems to skimp out on your medals while your crew gets them no problem. I have had 2 or 3 60k+ patrols in a row and I don't even have a U boat badge, let alone an Iron Cross yet :(

you need a certain ammount of renown to get medals
its not about the tonnage but the renown:up:

i am now in october 1943. i still have the same rank as i started with at the outbreak of war. my tonnage total is 2.7 million. including over 100,000 tons of warships.i am using the GWX files plus the expansion pack.i have tried changing the config file to alter my rank. but it just reverted back again. also the other frustrating part is about medals. you can award your crew medals up to knights cross. but you do not get all the medals yourself. just the knights cross. of course its the big one. crossed sourds, golden oakleaves. minor things in sh3. but still frustrating.
You can actually edit your own personell medals through SH3
like for instance I don't like awarding myself the knights cross
in the early years till I reach 100,000 tons so if I am awarded
the medal before I reach that amount I edit it back in the SH3
commander files so that I only have the EK 1st class or german cross
in Gold. Same goes with the Oak Leaves 200,000 tons and then the swords
250,000+ ect..
You can also edit you personell files so that you can put down claims vs actual
tonnage just for a bit more realism as in SH3 when you sink a ship
of say 8539 tons it is listed down as your actual tonnage but If I sank
this ship in a convoy at night mosy uboat commanders had to do a best guess
on the actual tonnage of the ship sometimes they were pretty close
on the mark and sometimes they were off the mark by a large margin
look at schepke's actual tonnage about 155,000 grt vs his claims which
were about 215,000 Grt so If I sink a ship in convoy I estimate the
tonage if it is that ship as before mentioned at 8539 I might claim it
as 9000-9500 grt and I will award my medals based on my claims
as it was down historicaly. Independant ship I always accurately claim
as you had more time to ID the target.
