View Full Version : Overall Performance After 1.3 Patch?

 I was wondering if people have noticed any performance improvements after installing the patch even if it is in beta. I remembered that this was one of the items that was going to be fixed when this patch was first announced.
Thanks.

However close the Beta was to the official release, I think in all fairnes, you'll have to judge it on 1.3 and not on the leaked Beta. Personally, I don't think you'll see a significant performance difference between 1.2 and 1.3

No mention of performance tweaks in the readme.

And no mention of it in the post by Dan in which they outlined the things they were working on.
I doubt you will see any performance increase. On the other hand you won't see any decreases either!

I can see smoother fps in the leaked beta 1.3, although you can see huge explosions and convoys. No stutters at all. Ati driver 7.6.

Its not out yet Jmack. These guys/gals are talking about the 'BETA' 1.3. Just do as I do and wait for the official 1.3 release :know:

I believe (but I could be mistaken) that that refers to a few new higher rez 2-d screens (radar and sonar for instance).

Overall Performance After 1.3 Patch?
No idea as at this moment I am DL now. ;)

Ahhh..certainly could be. I just had noticed that line at the SH4 homepage, and thought maybe it was the reason people are claiming to be getting a 'smoother' game.
Guess we'll see for sure soon.
Coincidently I'm about to instal a PhysX card, which is supposed to improve FPS even on games that do not use Ageia Physx by taking some of the processing load off the VPU.
I'll post results after.
ok ... i have the official patch 1.3 now ... the first good thing i noticed is that it works without the dvd on the drive the fps is worst than ever ... !!!! on my computer and i was able to run it pretty decently before. anyway this is just a rushed first impression

If you did the "Dev debug" fix the patch undoes it. You will have to fix it again. It really does seem to improve FPS.
Unless you have a marginal system... then you may have a problem.

dev debug ? ... now you got me :o whats that ?

Hi
I had the same issue. After 1.3, it wouldn't run. Turns out that I was the cause of it. My save games contained some 1.2 files I had put there that made the game crash as soon as I wanted to start running a training mission or save game. Here's what I did.
- deinstall SH4
- check that all folders (including the SH4 folder under My Documents) are gone and deleted
- restart your PC
- install SH4 from DVD
- restart your pc
- install patch 1.3 (it is cummulative, so it includes 1.1 and 1.2)
- restart your pc
- run the game
I know, you lose your save games this way, but it runs.
- insert the necessary mods.
Hope this helps.

Just a little feedback.
1.3 downloaded quickly, installed without a hitch, and performs quite nicely. No problems here.
I did not notice any difference in FPS.

I noticed an FPS drop, but am not sure if this had something to do with me running the 'TM' mod before (it has things like 'no grainy effect' that might have led to better performance)
I now disabled environmental fog & post process... and upped the resolution to 1280/1024 ... looks nice enough, and runs smoothly.

I've only had a couple hours to mess with the latest patch so far. As far as performance I've seen a big decline in performance coming out of Pearl (might be due to the wrecked battleships). I'm seeing FPS is the mid 20's to low 30's in harbor (used to be mid 40's in 1.2). I've noticed the spray from the props causes big FPS loss in external cam which wasn't the case in 1.2. In open ocean and attacking a small convoy yielded about the same frame rate. However the spray from the torpedos when they hit also caused FPS loss as well.
I did a complete uninstall, reinstall, and patch directly to 1.3. All graphics and sound setting set exactly as they were from 1.2 and I'm running 1200x960 4xAA and 8x AF (same as before). Running most current Nvidia drivers.
Overall I'm happy with the patch. Slightly disappointed in the degrade in performance though.

I'm seeing the same thing in Pearl Harbor - I'm also seeing psychedelic colors all around, but that may be drivers/vista. I'm updating to the current drivers (I hope).
Here's hoping.
Dimd:ping:ms.
Edit: right, that didn't work. It speeds up when it has less objects, but then the acid hits me again.
I'll put it down to drivers, but I don't want to revert to XP!
Anybody else seeing these problems in Vista, nvidia 7800 GTX?

LOL save your money
Go read the reviews and benchmarks first. I don't think anyone has seen any performance increase on ANY game with this thing, including the PhysX supported games like GRAW, because when it detects the PhysX, it flips into an entirely different physics mode that is so complex, while it looks better, performance drops even more than using nothing at all.
There is currently no generalized way that I have ever heard of to "offload" work from the GPU.

Where in the options of the game does it show the area to change the "AA" ?? . I'm running mine set to Override any application settings in my control panel setting. Running SH4 at 1600 x 1200 at 16 x Anisotropic Filtering and AA x 8. looks awesome......CHEERS
PS: Now if I could just play the game....:yep:

There is no option in game to change AA or AF. It all has to be done thru Nvidia Control Panel or ATI's equivalent.

Jmack, didn't you say earlier that your CPU was an Intel 6400? If so, it isn't a Dual Core, but a Core2 Duo... big difference in power consumption and heat generation; i.e. less power and less heat, and improved performance overall. The Core2 Duo 6400 (2.14GHz) is a fantastic processor. Don't pay too much attention to clock speeds these days - they're rapidly becoming redundant where CPU performance is concerned. If anything, your 7300 GT is the bottleneck in your system. If you can afford it, dump it onto E-bay and get an nVidia 7950 / ATi X1900XT or above. Your sys will love you for it. :)

I'm getting stuttering water in 1.3. I had this very occasionally in earlier versions after using time accel, but if I went back into time accel and back out again the water was fine. In 1.3 it's happening all the time.
Although the rest of the animations and FPS are ok the water stutters. I can't think of a way to explain it better than that. Just about any time I use time accel it happens!
