View Full Version : "Snapshots" and spread angle

Hello!

Has anyone tried to launch "snapshots" to other targets using target data of primary target + spread angle. I mean:

Let's say we have two targets here. You get your data for Target I, bearing, range, speed etc. and launch the tropedoes. After that you check just the bearing for Target II and use, if possible, just spread angle to left or right to send your next torpedoes into it.

I remember I tried this in SHI and got some good results. This way you could get your next few torpedoes on their way pretty fast, maybe too quickly Target II to start manouvering after you got your first hits on Target I. No hazzle with all target data is a good point in this, I think.

Few days ago left Pearl for my first patrol in SH IV and I'm looking forward to try the idea again. But anyone else? Have you tried or does anyone know if they tried this in RL? I think the idea is at least better than just shoot with "seaman's eye".

Are you kidding!? I do it all! I've even had to push torps out of tube with my bare hands! How else would I retain my title as No: 1 Sub Ace.

Normally I'd set up both attacks on the navmap. After firing at target #1 (the furthest away) I'd quickly disengage TDC, engage speed/AOB (obtained from plot), use stadimeter and engage target #2. I'm quite fast at this. Sometimes I even have to wait a while to obtain the TOT for both torpedo attacks simulaniously.

An other solution can be to engage a target with TDC, disengage the TDC and set it up for straight ahead or straight astern shots (even maybe with spread angle set in). If setup this way, the heading would be right for the second target. This includes some calculations, but if time permits, it can be very awarding.

Hmm. I can't say I've done that. I don't use the spread angle switch at all, don't care for it much. I'm hunting mostly unescorted small convoys in mid '43. I just pull up near where the course is gonna take them, wait for them to mozy on by, and launch two torpedoes for each ship. SOP mostly. I'm using the Mark 23's, so I don't have to set the things to fast each time and I launch around 1500-2000 meters. Generally speaking, they have little time to react before the entire convoy goes down in flames.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm going to try that next time I find a couple of boats with one following the other. In therory, it should work well, as you could set up the angle prior to firing at the first target, then fire at both about the same time. Hitting both at the same time would disallow an evasive manuver of the following boat! Thanks for the suggestion, We'll see how it works out.

Yep.

I think submarine should be close enough, maybe 1000-1500 yards to first target, otherwise distance to target II might be too much.
One way around this is just to adjust range to TII with seaman's eye, then use the spread. I think this was exactly what I did sometimes in SHI.
