Hi folks :D

So, i got this new Dell laptop with Core2Duo, 2gig mem and the 7950gtx nvidia card. I install SH4 to try it out at max resolution (1920 x 1200) and it works without a problem and it looks amazing :o

Due to the partitioning of the HD (one huuuge C: and a tiny Recovery partition) i decided to reinstall Vista (and in the process remake the HD partitioning).
Everything looked ok EXCEPT, SH4 doesn't start anymore...
All other games (Oblivion, Civ4, Neverwinter... etc) loads and plays well but not SH4.

There is a short spin on the DVD and i get the "spinning DVD icon" on screen, then nothing. In the taskmanager i can see SH4 loading and use memory and CPU but the only thing i see on the screen is my desktop.

Any ideas what this can be?
I'm a total Vista-noob so please be gentle :D

In your case I recommend you to reinstall everything on formatrd HD starting with OS. If you value this game so much. May be its too radical method for you.

With my vista:damn: install I had to give admin permission to run SHIV, even though its a home pc and i'm the only user:o .

Right click on your shortcut (make your own shortcuts cus' vista:damn: wont do that for you) and run as admin, also if your using mods you'll have to set these permissions in the adminstrator diag screen.

Hope this helps:up:

I Simply turned of UAC as it annoys the crap out of me.

Hi again !

Thanx for the suggestions :)
What i finally did was to reinstall Vista again over the old installation and... now i works! :D:D:D
The only difference was that i now used the graphic driver from dells site. Dunno if that was the deciding factor, or if the reinstall of Vista managed to fix something that only disturbed SH4.

Anyhow... back at the helm, feeling good :)

I'm pretty sure it was the "Run as Administrator" thing. I had the same promlem and the Administrator fix was the simple solution.

Not only will this break certain applications, Microsoft does not support this configuration.

Hi again :)

Well, here's an update on my little problem...
As i posted earlier, Sh4 ran just fine after my second reinstall of Vista (where i just dumped the the new install over the old one without formating the hd).
After a couple of SH4 sessions the old problem described in the first post reappeared again! It just would't load, no matter what!

So i started backtracking what i had done to the computer and found out that when i enabled Vistas "aero theme" SH4 would't load, but when i choose another theme it would load ok!
I can repete this on my computer forever,
Aero=no go
Anything else=ok

Don't know if this is any help for anyone, but i thought i would mention it just in case :)

I would say you broke something installing vista over itself, my Aero disables itself when a program like SH4 runs.

And that small partition was your instant recovery that dell installs on most of their systems. It can come in real handy at times to restore your system using a couple of key stokes to new in about 15 mins using a clone of the original.

I also finally turned of UAC, giving permissions to every file I needed to alter was getting annoying.

Yeah, however, it totally denies you any possibility to partition your drive as you see fit. What if I want to have one small system partition and one storage area so I can conveniently reinstall JUST the system? Or what if I wish to install Linux alongside my Windows? Any form of pre-decided partitioning, rights or limitations is utter bollox in my mind. Gimme my disc clean and gimme a DvD to install the OS with. Then I'm happy. Or let me run an OEM install where I can partition my drive as I see fit.

Yes I would agree on my own system I prefer to control this also. And there are still ways to change the partition with third party software.

But I prefer a second hard drive myself for data or OS

you might try this. get a shotgun and use the vista disc for a skeet target:rock:

Since Dell was nice enough to send me av Vista DVD i didn't bother with the restore partition :|\\

When you guys say that aero disable itself... how does that look? How do you know it disabled itself? A popup?
Or is it gone when you return to the desktop when exiting SH4?
