Forrestal captian said there was no simulated torpedo firing and the screen was never broken on this exercise.....The USS Torsk was right in the mix....explain these wonderful pictures from the scope of the USS Torsk:o

Darn embarassing really....she had the Forrestal dead to rights on this little exercise.

Made it pretty hard to deny !

Note the second shot a beautiful starbord setup (if the tubes were pointed that way).

Yep, that be the sub I go to every Saturday to restore:D These are kept along with the historical facts by Gil Bohannan. We have a large archive.

It is fun and relaxing actually!!! ATR-42 posted some pics of his visit. I wish I was there when he arrived!

I'm thinking the photos were the 1960s equivalent of Photoshop (perhaps produced by the sub crew to win a bet or something), or taken at a different time/circumstances. (Or, heck, fabricated whole cloth after the fact, story included. Not like sailor's have a tendency to...ummm...embellishment or anything.)

I can't imagine how the sub's periscope could POSSIBLY be so elevated to be looking down on the carrier deck (note the angle of the deck in the second pic) without anyone noticing them.

No embellishment here. Go to the next page and see the man that did it. No photo shopping back then!!! Furthermore, the scope is level with the deck and this is achieved by being at a distance and using the magnifying function. I have looked through these scopes personally and the magnification is just plain fantastic. Hey, you tell Fred Edwards he is pulling a fast one!!!!!

I don't disagree that the magnification is magnificent - I've looked through several 'scopes, myself, and it really is quite stunning how clear a view you get through them.

My issue is that the angle of the deck is questionable. The photo looks at least level with the deck, maybe above it (look to the left of the picture, behind the tower...it appears you can see some of the top of the deck, here). Distance doesn't have anything to do with it, Forrestal's flight deck was 100ft above her keel...I just can't imagine how a periscope could POSSIBLY get enough elevation to be over it if the sub was submerged.

Periscopes on submarines may be as long as 60 feet! Photoshop was not arround in the 60's. I was still watching black and white TV with only three channels! At that distance and magnifed the deck will look level. If we were sitting right next to the vessel he would have the scope looking up to catch the underside of the deck. Like I said, you tell Fred he is pulling a fast one!

Now take a look at this one and tell me what you think? Now zoom in and tell me if you would see the deck or be just about level with it? If I remember my geometry correctly, the angle is deceiving to the eye at greater distances.

The top carrier shot is my favorite. I can see the top of the deck also or just about level. In fact, flip through all the images and tell me what you think.

Yes sir! After all the fishes American names for them were used up they started using other languages names of fish for the boats. Kind of cool:yep:

"Gädda" means (northern) pike, "Arborre"= Pearch, "Lax" = salmon,

I guess they do but I do not believe there were subs named for these. Eventually they rehashed the original names for a while.

A good one would be the 'coelacanth'. First one was caught off my home town and made headline news around the world.
