View Full Version : I think this is my first GWX bitch.
While transiting to my patrol area NE of Port of Spain, I expected the possible appearance of aircraft based in Bridgeport. Had flack manned and proceeded on low TC.
The weather was CAFB ( Clear as a bell ;) ), sea calm.
The silly screen telling me aircraft sighted popped up forcing me to click PD then C. For the few seconds I was on the bridge, machinegun bullets were already stitching my boat.
A couple of bombs exploded in the vicinity but no damage was done --panic over.
An hour later, I'm on the bridge at TC-1.
"Fluzeug gesichted!"
I ordered crash dive and flipped to the next ship view. A PBY Catalina was on top of my sumbie and firing its forward machine guns. This time we took damage from bombs and we had a bit of a time dealing with all the leaks.
Here are my questions to the GWX modders:
1.) Are my lookouts blind to PBYs?
2.) How come a notoriously slow airplane (climbs at 90, cruises at 90, glides at 90 ((actually they cruised at 110 kts)) gets to me faster than a Hurricane doing well over 200 kts?
3.) Are different speeds factored in GWX aircraft?
I'll admit, maybe crafty AI played a role by diving out of the sun.
Your comments will be appreciated (no, I wasn't lounging on a deck chair, enjoying the weather, and slurping pina coladas)
Here is the plane's position approx 10-15 seconds after sighting

a group of B-14 (i think) flew over and gave me 2 bombs for dinner (they hit the kitchen)

Visual sensors are the most complicated to adjust in SH3  GWX has lots of work put into it, but a compromise must be reached in some areas, and in certain conditions the crew certainly seems to be slow at spotting aircraft. AFAIK this will be improved in patch 1.04, in the line of what Rubini already did with his "Stay Alert Crew" mod, so use that mod if you want to have better GWX experience. Also, 8km visibility is not good for aircrafts, you see them when already too close. :hmm:

I've never professed to understand the AI of aircraft entirely :nope: ....but having had similar experiences I put it down to the human eror that exists in all individuals from time to time (some people being more alert or better at observancy than others) :arrgh!:

Not directly related, but a little story about that "human error".
When our destroyer was going to open fire there was always a warning: "All hands stand clear of the fo'c'sle while firing from Mount 51" (or fantail and Mount 52). This would give everyone time to be well away from the firing twin 5"/38 mount.
One day a shipmate and I were sitting on the forward chocks (small posts to tie the lines to), just talking. All at once the forward turret started to turn toward the shore, about ten feet away from us. Realizing what was happening we leaped up and ran through the door in the seawall behind the turret. We were just pulling the door closed when the warning came:
"All hands stand clear of the fo'c'sle while firing from..." BOOM!
My ears were ringing for hours afterward.

Steve, good thing you were talking and not sleeping :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Well, I was ready to post a technical description of visual sensor challenges, but Hitman beat me to it. (Thank you sir.:yep: )
Instead, I will just say this.
Neener. Neener. Gotcha.:smug:
In all seriousness, the only way to "fix" the visual sensors may be to reintroduce other old problems like the vampire night vision.
Another note on player visual sensors. They are sensitive to the size, speed, and aspect ratio of the object to be spotted. (Just like the enemy AI in many ways) The same player visual sensors are used for all occasions, which also cases some quirks to appear.
We will do what we can to hit a happy medium. No doubt some will be okay with it and others not. Does anyone have some chicken wire and bubblegum that we can borrow? We could also use a harmonica player.
Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhh, anything but not the vampire night vision!
Thanks, Capt Lehman and team for listening to our gripes :D. I'm sure GWX 1.04 will improve an already phenomenal sym.
:arrgh!: :damn:   :sunny: :nope:    :smug:
What is wierd is that on my 14th mission in mid 42 & have not seen a single enemy aircraft! Maybe just fluke, I have my sensors changed but this should have no effect. Have been stationed in Wilhelmshaven, Kiel, Lorient, & now La Spezia.

There's too much levity in this thread where we ponder serious matters of great nautical importance and global dimentions. :shifty: Kaleuns are requested to wipe the grins off their faces and seriously consider the implications, consequences, and results on this sober thread by their levitinous behaviour. With serious good humour, we move forward toward victory. Kaleuns, we have a war to win. That is a serial matter.

Yes I agree.
However, I hesitate to articulate further as it may deviate from the course of basic cordiality and fail to be consistent with the needs of the many.
It is unfortunate that the subject of scrutinization has apparently again failed to understand this and remains in a state of obfuscation.
...but then again... what else is new?

Visual sensors are the most complicated to adjust in SH3  GWX has lots of work put into it, but a compromise must be reached in some areas, and in certain conditions the crew certainly seems to be slow at spotting aircraft. AFAIK this will be improved in patch 1.04, in the line of what Rubini already did with his "Stay Alert Crew" mod, so use that mod if you want to have better GWX experience. Also, 8km visibility is not good for aircrafts, you see them when already too close. :hmm:
So you are suggesting to enable the 16km visibility option to get better (more) reports on aircraft from your AI watch?
Or do you mean that I can see them earlier with my binoculars?
I never tried the 16km mod because of the performance loss that was mentioned in the GWX manual.
