View Full Version : Lovely Surprise on my 2nd Patrol

GWX, 80-something realism. Sept/Oct 1939. South of England.

I decided to head into Plymouth for a quick look around on my way back to base with 4 eels left yesterday after a patrol that seemed doomed to mediocrity. While i snuck in i noticed the outline of a battleship docked in port at a very tight angle. I ran silent and maneouvered my sub inside the dock for a better look and possibly, a clear line of sight. I managed to sneak in and after some extremely uncomfortable tight turning i got within 400 metres to 30 degrees port of her. Upon lifting my scope i compared my view to my notepad. It was far too dark to get a clear ID but after some detailed observation i concluded that my target was a Revenge class battleship.

I set my TDC; speed 0, angle 30 degrees, bearing 0 for some compartment targeting, magnetic fuse just below draft since i couldnt get in a better angle and an ignition fuse would certainly bounce off the ship from where i was.... i targeted 4 different spots on the ship, paying special attention to the ammunition compartments. Just as i was finishing my calculations, the revenge cruiser's flood lights came to life. At this point i almost wet my pants. Without further hesitation i manually targeted the scope at the ship and fired all 4 front eels.

1st eel dud  , 2nd eel also failed to explode :damn: , 3rd eel approached the rear ammunition compartment and made beautiful contact :arrgh!: , 4th eel also made its mark at the far rear. 3 seconds later i was witness to the most beautiful and awe inspiring firework feast of my life. A MASSIVE explosion ripped through the engine bay area and the whole ship blew up as 4 seperate explosions ripped through the ship, tearing her in two. I lowered my scope and made haste, the destroyers will be upon me soon. Silent running, just below the surface i made my escape. I maneouvered around the 4 V&Ws, 2 corvettes, and 2 torpedo boats. This took a lot of twisting and turning but after a couple of hours i was back out in open water. I plotted for home and finally made it.. this was to be an outstanding mission after a long list of low-medium tonnage targets.

Upon arriving to check my tonnage i was hit by a surprise. The battleship was infact not a Revenge class but the almighty HMS HOOD! :|\\ a nice 40000+ tonnage to my belt. Quite a feat for an amateur captain on his 2nd Patrol i thought! :rotfl:

Im sorry for rambling on but i was so excited that i had to tell somebody... especially since my girlfriend didnt seem very amused at how excited i was and how seriously i took this fantastic victory for zi germans! :arrgh!:

this game kicks some serious ass.

Congratulations on your achievement. I was surprised myself this morning, Sept '39 got a report of a convoy approaching the gap between Ireland and Scotland. Managed to penetrate the destroyer screen and set up a decent approach within the convoy to torpedo a large merchant and two tankers with my bow torps. Then I noticed a Nelson Class battleship (strange looking battleship, like the stern has been cut off), which was approaching my rear. Damn it, if I'd only noticed it earlier I would have saved at least one of my bow torps. As it is I only have my stern tube for attack. Fired my stern torp at a range of 750 metres and dived deep. The battleship took the hit and is listing noticeably to starboard but managing to keep up with the convoy. I am determined to have another go, so will plot a course for a second intercept later. The only problem is, the further I follow this convoy towards Ireland the shallower the sea becomes.

perhaps the Nelson's speed will drop making the line up for the next attack a little easier

Nice story and well done on a great success.

I really enjoy reading mission reports from SHIII players, particularly now that I can't play SHIII due to my monitor packing it in wth all the colours screwed up. There is just no point until my new Samsung SM226BW 22" widescreen TFT turns up.

Again congrats on your success. :yep:

I wonder if there are armour values in GWX because if there are and you were to do a surface dg attack, you wouldnt really dent it much.

kvbrock82 .. well done to you, on your second mission and over 80% Realism too
wish you had done some Screenshots of the Hood exploding; maybe next time ?!
BTW, your writing style, like Brags is immersive .. why you Guys aren't making any money out of your talents is beyond me.

thanks :smug:

i havent been playing for long and i wasnt thinking of anything besides seeing that cruiser hit the seabed, let alone learning how to take screenshots :rotfl:

However, yesterday i deleted my 2nd patrol save by mistake :damn: so i decided to head back to Plymouth on my new second patrol to find my prize again and there she was! I went to sleep just as i sunk her because it was late and i had work this morning so she should be there as soon as i load up the game. So.... how do i take a screenie? :know:

Press Ctrl and F11.
You will find the image [as a bitmap image] in your SHIII folder.
Pressing F1 while in-game will give you more options.
Look forward to seeing a Screenshot :yep: .
Any problems, send me a PM.

Nemo

After plotting a second intercept course I headed off at flank speed. Unfortunately it is late morning and there is only light cloud cover so I am completely exposed to aircraft attack. After about an hour my watch crew spot two Avro Ansons coming straight at us. Crash dive to 40 metres and hear several depth charge explosions close by. I give it 30 minutes and pop up to preriscope depth and use the observation scope to see if there are any aircraft around. Spot an Anson in the distance so remain submerged for another 30 minutes. Take another look through the scope and all clear to surface and go to flank speed. Whilst approching the predicted course of the convoy my watch crew spot a destroyer at 4,500 metres. That's odd the convoy must have changed course! Dive down to 40 metres and my soundman picks up the convoy and I am able to alter course for a better approach. Unfortunately I have been detected by the lead destroyer which is using asdic. Go to silent speed but remain at 40 metres. After a couple of close depth charge runs the destroyer appears to have lost me so I slowly rise to periscope depth. I observe the Nelson Class Battleship (HMS Rodney) approaching at a range of 3,500 metres still listing to starboard. Down scope. Make slight alteration of course to get in a better firing position. After a while I raise scope again, constantly keeping my soundman alert to the nearest destroyer. The Battleship is now at a range of 2,300 metres but not at an ideal angle for attack. What the hell, if I don't fire now I'll completely miss the opportunity. Fire a spread of three torpedoes. After the alotted time my first torpedo hits the Battleship. The second and third miss.

Dive deeper to 60 metres (am in shallow water so can't go much deeper) and await the escorts to unleash their fury at the audacity of a u-boat attacking one of the Royal Navy's pride and joy.

After a while I have three destroyers overhead dropping depth charges on me some quite close other some distance away. Then I get the "She's going down" message and I immediatley check my log to see 36,000 tons added to my patrol total. I managed to sneak away and whilst remaining submerged my soundman picks up a merchant at long range closing, a stragler from the convoy maybe. It looks like my patrol ain't over yet, still got two torpedoes remaining and a merchant coming in my direction!

Thanks, kvbrock82. Lucky it was in '39, if it had been later in the war it would have been much more of a challenge if not deadly.
