Has anyone in the community played a patrol on real time, without using TC?

I've thought about doing this. Should be pretty fun with a bunch of radio mods!
But not before the 1.3 patch. Besides, I have some weird stability issues with my pc so obviously, I need to fix things like that first

I'm sure that to run real time you have to be
1. Single
2. Retired
3. Not interested in the opposite sex, or badly hurt by one
4. Live in an area of looong winters
5. Have no interest in the outside world
6. Have waaay too much time on your hands

I did a 1x cruise from Pearl to Midway when I first got the game, sort of a shake down cruise: trim dives, speed trials, crash dives, battle stations, etc. It was fun, and I saw some other ships and had some contacts, but they were all USA, of course. Just that, though, for SH4, not a real patrol. :)

8. Way too much free time on your hands.
I can just picture it. Weeks, no months... of staring at empty ocean.

Yeah when I first read it....I was thinking...now how in the heck did that make it by the mods....but in the end...a legit question....I'm still waiting on 1.3 to install my version of SHIV. But in the meanwhile..I need to get my post count up....yep..post whore!

It didn't take that long, RT, and it was a lot of fun. :D

Ironically (coming from being a 'hardcore' flight sim environment) I knew exactly what he was talking about, and didn't confuse it with....uh... That Which Moderators Might Object.
But I've not tried this... at least not in any sort of 'for the simulation' sake. I -have- let things run on their own at 1x when:
1) I was close to a base.
2) I was: too tired/needed to so something else/needed a cigarette.
Otherwise, I've never -trusted- this game long enough to go away without something dreadful happening.
Maybe 1.3 will help this. But I doubt it. =)

7. Certifiable
I play FSX quite a lot and in the weekends ill do some medium long flights (3 hours or so). But in a flight sim there is constantly stuff to do and monitor. And in FSX you speak with air traffic controll etc.
In a subsim...well.... plot a course and snort some cocaine, because it sure as hell wont be very interesting to sail from pearl to japan in real time, no matter how dedicated you are

My God, it's like you're watching me! Spooky.
Seriously though, I would like to try real-time but my CPU fan is running at full wack (despite being a 3.4 Gig Pentium 4) and coupled with my Nvidia 7600 GT card, polygons start to come apart after about 20 mins (even with 2 Gig of Memory and the 1.3 Beta Patch ). Does anybody know what this could be? It's ruining my enjoyment. Please HELP!!:damn:
I started in RT when I first got the game ... being Hardcore ... after 3 days of sailing from Manilla to my assigned patrol post, and still not getting there, I decided to go to TC. :nope: HOWEVER, I never have played beyond 128 TC.

Sounds like you already have a good idea what it is.... heat.
You can try an experiment before you invest the time/money in fans, heat sinks and/or cases. Open the case and blow a small house fan directly into the computer guts. Shake well (ie, play SH4) and see if that doesn't fix the problem. As an FYI... just leaving the case open without blowing air at it may not have the desired effect, and some times makes things worse.
If so, maybe adding a couple extra case fans (in at the front/bottom, out at the back/top) will do the trick.
If not, my next guess would be a power supply problem. Harder to nail down, that, other than by just replacing it and see what happens.

Not without a captains cabin.
On SH3 I used to spend amounts of time in 1x, but in the captains cabin, with the radio on, and lay on the couch and read.
That was kinda fun, and immersive.

I remember a long time ago seeing a post about a " NUT " who took a year playing SH-3 at 1x tc from start to finish.
He was removed from his room wrapped in a wet sheet escorted by two men dressed in all white.
And his eyes were two large black dots. :o
He kept yelling ... ALARM ALARM ALARM

Get out.
He did a whole patrol on 1x?????????
If so, where did he sleep, next to his rig or what.
If he went for a dumbster and the planes would attack, would he get his place all messed up, come on, really???

Several people have claimed to have done 1x patrols; sleep with the computer sound turned up loud, doing other things while SH3/4 runs in the background etc. I've always argued that the only way to truly do it would be to save the game and only play when you can, a few hours at a time. On the other hand, sailors do do other things to keep from being bored. On the other other hand, do you sit and stare at the screen for four-hour watches at one time?
I don't know myself, but I still don't see how it adds to the realism of a computer screen, even when it's a flight sim.

10. Running in a Virtual Machine so you can do plenty of full system memory snapshots to avoid relying on the savegame mechanism to rescue you when the game inevitably crashes.
Not being pessimistic, but I would never expect any game to run for more than 48 hours or so without crashing somehow.

I've had SH3 running at 1x for 9 days (an early patrol in a IIA in '39) and it never crashed on me. Not once.
I once ran a 1x patrol for two weeks...no crash. So, yeah, it can happen. :)

I have to plead guilty on five of the six reasons, but I worry about some of you folks.
Old Dog
But why would one do that. Why do a two week patrol in real time.
Is it truely adding immersion. Is it " I've done it, so now let's time compress", why would one do this.:hmm:
I'm curious

LMAO word..... If you want realism so bad join the navy. And get on a sub, you only have to score a 50 or higher on the asvab, and I scored a 62 which im told is pretty good.
