American tourist comes to Germany, falls in love with a woman and decides to stay.
The woman dumps him. Without passport and residence permit, he goes into the woods near Koblenz to live alone for some years until the authorities take care of him.

On another note.

Another American tourist in Germany

Is there a problem with Americans coming to your country and doing such odd things?

When I was stationed in Germany (1978-81) they found a guy from my unit who had gone awol, hiding out in his German girlfriends Berlin apartment since the 1950's. Afraid to go outside for fear the MP's would pick him up he became a complete shut in.

When she passed away in 1979 (thereabouts) he finally turned himself into the authorities.

The forrests in the Palatinate are famous hideaways for everbody who wants to stay hidden.
From the famous anti-napoleonic robin hood figure Schinderhannes over german soldiers who fled from french captivity after the war to 1960s youth gangs.
Also special is that at least in the more remote villages people tend to regard those hiding in the woods as folk heroes.
