Ahh.. good. Thanks for the response. Not easy to get. Well, I have an X1600 that has been serving me well. Flight Games, SH3, etc. SH4 looks good too, though, you know... I 'could use' better. In an effort to 'try', I downloaded 7.6 [and 7.2 7.3 7.4 7.5]. I installed 7.6 and played SH4. I 'think' it was a little better on Frame Rate, etc. Then... I found that when I started my computer, it came up in the XP desktop. Further, I hate the racket from the stock 'sounds' so I have selected 'No Sounds' in the control panel, and normally, they are NOT on. Well, with 7.6 installed, even that setting didn't 'hold'. I THEN found that if I went back to 7.1, the 'odd' condition remained. So...[moan]... I reformatted the computer, and started again. After a week or so of trying to nail it down, I have concluded that installation of the files for 7.2 --7.6 installs some file(s) that 'confuses' the O.S., causing it to not hold settings. Worse,I can't 'go back' to 7.1 'conditions'. I wiped out the registry on each try...'nope'.

My Wife's computer is also Hewlett-Packard and her's does exactly the same things... with HER X1600.

I did a final DB&N cleaning of MY H/D, reformatted... installed 7.1 and all is well, of course. I went to the ATI site and tried to get Tech Support on the issue, but I guess my 'card' is too old for that.

Since this occurs in TWO machines, it must be 'real'... but I had hoped to get a better handle on it...

HMMMM Sounds VERY strange to me..I used ATI for a loooong time until this system and never had anything close to that..Do you have a sound card or onboard sound?

Ohhh.... yeah. Been making me pull the rest of the hair out of my head, that's for sure! We both have "Creative SB Audigy 4" audio...

I have heard of some kinds of things where audio messes...Really odd, to me. But then, so is a video driver situation that messes up desktop settings ! That is, unless one [or more] of those files that the CCC programs that come WITH the driver installs a conflicting 'dll / dat / bat'...whatever. [way out of my league there, I just recognise that such file extensions exist in the 'nerve system' of the computers]

I do not know but I can tell you that 7.6 produced CTD for me. I have reverted to 7.3 which always seemed good to me.

Thanks, 'Hawk... I have not had CTD with any version...although I have to admit that I have not 'wrung out' either SH yet... just dabbled.... Spring/Summer chores, etc...

Do either of you [or anybody else reading this] know what happens, or how it works, to only install the Drivers, and NOT the Catalyst Control Panel? From the way I run this machine, all I ever do with it is turn on the Anti-Aliasing.. and that for Falcon 4.0 [It seems to take more of a Frame Rate hit from 1600x1200 res than from 1024 or so and A-A] With no need for A-A, *I* personally, have no need for the CCC files...

Gads, I hate the thought, but I might just risk ONE MORE reformat, just to find out..................

For that matter, I wonder what happens if you run 7.6 Drivers and 7.1 CCC ???????????????????

Subject
07-08-07, 05:32 PM
Never liked CCC, installed new versions a couple of times to have a look, but always ends up uninstalling it

ATI strongly recommends *not* to mix different versions of drivers/CCC. Compability issues...

Occasional I forget to use ATI's "uninstall all"-software before installing new drivers. Always gives me very slow screen updating... pita.

Good.... Got 'em... Where do you Extract that 7Z file TO ???

CaptainHaplo
07-08-07, 06:04 PM
I am running 7.5 and only use the classic desktop. I also only use the driver only - the "CCC" is buggy as all get out. Have not had a single issue as you describe - not so sure I would pin it on the vid driver necessarily. If you do decide to reformat - I suggest that once you get it set like you want it before the new driver install - do a ghost or similiar image so its easy to recover. Then install the driver - and nothing else - and reboot - see if the desktop has reverted. If so - reghost and then do an image compare and see what has changed. Its very odd for a device driver to change config files for the OS like that.

Chief of the Boat
07-08-07, 06:19 PM
I probably confused the issue by refering to 'Drivers' when I actually meant both the DD_XP and the CCC_EN files.... which.... apparently are not BOTH necessary.

I have heard of the Ghost routine, but am not familiar with it. I *have* DB&N + Recovery so many times it is 'easy'... just a little time consuming. I have a 500 GB external H/D that we both use for a 'disconnectable' back-up, but I feel sure of simply Biting the Bullet.

I'm going to Go For It tomorrow... Kind of excited to find some Reason amongst the Chaos of last week !

Chief of the Boat
07-08-07, 06:22 PM
ClayP : Yeah...yeah. I haven't used 7Z much. Finally I realized the Extract was just to get the Set-Up, etc. I got it now...
May well wind up using it... Thanks...

Also, I guess using *no* 'Tools', or the Guru3d tools probably doesn't require installation of Framework .NET 2.0 ???

[I can't wait for that SH4 mission, in '7.6....]

So..... you have run ONLY drivers, and not 'the tools' [CCC]...?Yeah, I usually pick it up here: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonxip-xp.html

Note, that's Radeon drivers on XP. For other combinations see here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

If you're unsure regarding removing old drivers, here's the knowledgebase: http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=20870

It's absolutely ridiculous that ATI *still* haven't made their driverinstallation automatically remove previous versions and it's a pain that updating makes a total mess of the desktop. Amateurs!

Besides that, always liked ATI cards though :rotfl:

I know, no big deal. But anyway...

:hmm: doesn't your system act like that, when you upgrade/change drivers?

If you have audigy card , go to program files\creative and delete the CTEaxSpl splash screen startup . Install the original drivers from your disk . I have no end of trouble from audigy drivers .

Chief of the Boat

Be glad to try that...*if* I had the file! Lots of subfolders in 'Creative'... so I just did a search for CTEaxSpl... and came up with a dry hole...

T'anks anyway, Mate...

The only thing I have to do is set up my AA and AF. Other than that, my desktop is resized to they way I have it. I use the ATI tray tool and not the CCC.

This morning... after several days of stable operation with version 7.1 in Windows Classic/ No Sound... I went to the Control Panel, and, using the ATI Utility, I un-installed 'all things ATI'. I know that doesn't include the Registry, but...

I installed *ONLY* "7.6_xp_dd_48640".

When I Restarted my computer.... up came a "XP Desktop" and Music! I am [of course] able to re-activate my Saved Preference for DT...but on the next four Restarts I had to do that...each time.

Then I tried to go back to version 7.1... The Rock. Nope. "XP D-T". Something in those 7.6 DRIVERS has installed some file that REMAINS and fouls me up.

I tried installing ALSO the Guru3d Tools. Yes... Very impressive bunch of controls... assuming you can use them, in your own operations, but no change at all in the way my computer NOW runs...... and, from my previous experience, **WILL** until I take a day and Cleanse the H/D, Reformat and reinstall everything.

I could live with it, I suppose, and get used to the XP LOOK, but I hate that, and I am supposed to be able to control this damned thing.

So....................... Unless there is some Ju-Ju-Oil out there somewhere that I can rub on the Grey Cabinet, it appears I am well and truly Snookered, for ATI driver use above 7.1, to run My computers...My way.....

Besides that, I'm blank. If you have System Restore activated, you could restore to the point before you installed v7.6 first time... best of luck!

Thanks, Subject... I suppose the REAL answer probably lies somewhere in the concept of a Factory Machine... as opposed to the 'better' idea of a Home-Brewed [built] one. Likely some marrying of files and all in the H/P O.S. and Apps is bringing this on, where the Other Guys don't have it.

I'll drink to that...

Ok click the start button go to the "RUN" BUTTON..Type in DXDIAG..Do all of the tests. At the end of testing there is a "SAVE ALL INFORMATION" button on the bottom of the applet.Click this and "SAVE TO DESKTOP"..It will be on your desktop.Just copy and paste all of the info from the saved file to a post here..I will see if I can determine anything from it...I'm in CALIF..On the way to the doctors now...:-?

Me neither...but I'm not sure I'd recognise it if there were a problem. I'm kinda tired of the whole thing. Very likely the version 7.1 'set' will do everything I need, as I am not really a 'game' player, and from what I've seen the 'games' I do play work fine with them. So....'Mate........I thank you for the time and trouble you put in. If you have any interest in SKYPE with me, bang around this or any other topic, I'll pass long my info. Otherwise... another 'cool one' for this heat. It is NOT supposed to be this hot, up here...!!!

@#$$@............ Enough, Already !

As I type on this L/T, DB&N is cleansing that other computer.... I AM DONE WITH THIS...

I'll run SH4 on the 7.1 drivers... or take an Excedrin and go back to playing Nazi in SH3............. or fly the F-16 in Falcon 4.0

Yup.... ENOUGH........[and I am pretty sure it's nobody's fault except this dern grey box]..........
