Hey guys
I just noticed soemthign really wierd related to slowdowns. My ssytem ain't exactly top knotch (actually a little below min specs) and slows down some when ship formations are nearby (~50km give or take 20%). So whenever I'm near convoys, TFs or ports, TC beyong 256 is absolutely unbearable (takes several good seconds for the game to ack the pause command).
So I had a mission to photograph some carrier force on the China coast. Siucide mission that one but I had to try. I was lucky enough to miss the sub net on my way inso I backtracked on my way out. I still had AFT tubes full with spares, so I decided to give the 2 CVs hell, from like 7000m away. I was next to 3 stationary DDs when I did this.
After getting away from that port, I noticed my system was still running slow as hell (as if ships were nearby). Thas wasn't the case. I decided to head back into the port and sink the rest of the ships there. So I sneaked back in, also had to load a save as the first time around I aparently missed a mine by inches. ANyway, I suck the other 4 docked ships (3 DD, 1 seaplane tender). On my way out I noticed 2048 TC was playable (everything had reverted back to normal -- normal for my system that is).
Bottom line: if you engage a docked force but don't sink all ships, the game keeps acting as if you were in proximity of those ships. This is not true for Convoys or TFs encoutnered at sea, just docked ships. This confirms an old hunch I had when it took me 65 real time minutes to get from Bismark Sea to Pearl due to sluggishly low FPS (more like seconds per frame, really) on anything beyong 512 TC (higher or lower values were actually slower). The last thing I had done before that was assault a port and sink half the ships, leaving a moored DD and Light Cruiser intact (screw low tonnage!).
