U-67 Joins Paukenschlag

After a 32 day passage, on 03 April 1942, we arrived to our patrol sector just NE of Cape Hateras. The weather enroute had been absolutely unspeakable and caused us to burn a lot more fuel than anticipated. We had just a hair over 50% of diesel remaining in the bunkers.

Being thoroughly averse to shallow water, I found a nice deep hole SE of Hatteras where I could cover most traffic rounding the cape. 1000 meters depth off the American coast is fat city.

For two days the only contacts were 2 destroyers, a sailboat, and a dinky super small freighter not worth a torp.

The weather continued to be outrageously bad.

In the morning of the 7th. we intercepted an ore carrier in apalling visibility, it took two torpedoes to sink it.

Visibility improved in the afteroon. Two tankers came our way requiring a little bit of astern propulsion for us to get into firing position.

I sent two fish at the lead tanker. The first torpedo hit forward, the ship exploded and sank within seconds.

I sent a magnetic greeting toward the now zizagging second oiler. American tankers burn much better than British ones. The floating bonfire sank within minutes.

A liberty and a small freighter added tonnage to 52,000 and we still hve 9 torpedoes left. If we have enough fuel to get back home, this is already a successful patrol. :D

So far, traffic is as good as Tanker Alley and north edge of Gulf of Cadiz. I have only GWX 1.03

Thats good to hear Brag. I've started a new career in Sept 41 with a IXC out of Lorient in the hope of gaining some renown and then hopefully venturing to the USA when Op Paukenschlag kicks off in Feb 42.

Never really done the trans Atlantic thing before it's about time I did it;)

09 April 1942.
Weather still lousy (fortunatelly).

We were following a whale factory, waiting for it to sink from one torpedo hit.

A destroyer popped out of the darkness and opened fire. We took a lot of damage while submerging. A sharp turn while still at high speed saved us from a depth charge barrage.

Critical leaks in both torpedoe compartments and electric motors comparment accelerated our dive. The destroyer made another pass but missed. Not that it made much difference. I realized we were sinking as we passed 200 meters.I blew ballast, it slowed the dive.

While boat chief bitched about our situation the crew cheered. We sank something. There were lots of explosions nearby.

On approaching 300 meters I blew all ballastand we began to rise.
The logbook showed the whalefactory as sunk.

We no longer heard the destroyer.
We broke surface expecting the destroyer to open fire on us--nothing. I turned east and headed away from the area at 7 knots.

The crew fixed the leaks, we're still floating. What happened to that destroyer is a mystery.

Just sank 2 lake steamers. Sorry, Steed. I know this is not up to your standards. I will try to find some more tankers . :roll:

I have ventured out to Cape Hatteras, nothing but enemy destroyers and really terrible weather. I know its March '42 but the amount of DD's are getting very silly - nothing at all like the history books. Had one DD catch me on the surface and in 15 m/s winds and heavy fog - managed to get down in time but suffered 40% reduction in hull integrity :cry: It's been rubbish weather for nearly a week I hope it clears up soon.

88,000 tonnage :huh: , I know everyone or most people are in the 100k (or 200K) club but the mosst I've got is 70,000 K. :damn:
