If you can decide, when do you prefer to carry out a convoy attack?
1) During the day
2) At night
3) At dawn
4) At dusk
5) In fog
6) Running seas/rain
I had my first attack in heavy fog and it was a blast. The destroyers are muted to an extent, high seas does not make for good sonar - when you hit a merchant it invariably lights up giving you a beacon in the fog. The destroyers too, flash their signal lights which further helps you. Of course I did this from the perimiter of the convoy as you run the risk of been run over if you get in among them. It was really fun.

range / 1/2 dot gives time of attack using the targets speed
You misunderstood Von Tonner's question, micky1up.

I'd rather attack a dusk and have all night to clean up my mess in relative safety. But I'll attack when the opportunity presents itself, even in non-optimal conditions as long as it is not a patently foolhardy move.
Definitely prefer daytime. The visibility and time available in which to plan an attack because of it, are just too good a set of advantages to pass up. If I can manage it, I'll try and get several good shots away at as long a range as possible, and if conditions permit, I might even turn around and pop some from the stern tubes.
Once you're evading, there's not a lot of disadvantages to it being daytime up top, so that's not a problem either.

When the situation presents itself, depends upon my position relative to the targets, current load-out, shape my sub is in.
So, it could be any of those above conditions.

My night optics stink. So I try to attack with daylight. My computer a little on the slow side for this game.

I have a problem with night attack, because with full realism setting on plus my vision is affected by astignmatism and very dark 'night' enviroment(lol). Therefore I prefer dusk, dawn or day attack.
PS do we have a mod to make night a little bit( lol) 'brighter'?
^^^ there is a grpahics setting to up the gamma, that will brighten things generally.
Since I use manual TDC, I guess I prefer daylight submerged attacks since any mistake in a ship ID is frequently a miss.

Nor the heat of the day or darkness of night through rain sleet or hail shall keep me from delivering my rounds.
Only exception is photo recons which I do in the daytime for obvious reasons.
Daylight. It can get a bit rough if the escorts are good and it's too early in the day, but generally I consider the improved visibility to be enough of of an advantage for me to risk it.
I see a convoy I go after it and sod what time of day it is. ;)

And at night...
And at dawn...
And at dusk...
and in fog...
even in running seas/rain...
just whenever a Nip shows up!!!:yep:
When DD's are involved;kill the merchants and go for the termal layer after trying to pump a fish into the DD's bow!

Yeah, I hit'em whenever and wherever. I'd have to say really heavy fog and seas are the most difficult and least preferable. I can deal with heavy seas well enough, just not heavy fog.
When I do have a bit of choice, I like just before sunrise with mild seas (7m/s or under). Not quite dawn with light peeking over. I prefer to put the first salvo in when it's pitch dark. During evasion and reloading, it's nice to have a little sunlight creep up for the second salvo, in case I determine the deck gun will be better to finish things. Need some light to see if the thing has deck guns bow and stern.

Don't worry about collisions - they're 90% likely to be harmless.

Usually an attack is best planned during the day and executed at night. I doubt ships in a convoy change place during a day. IDing them then attacking at nightfall is usually the best course of action.
If given a weather choice, I simply LOVE heavy fog/rain. Radar and hydros guide me through and the damn escorts can't see a bloody thing. Surface attack and surfaced escape for the win!
