September 1942, I went to Porto Delgado, a neutral (Portuguese?) harbour to "resupply food and other things" (just hang around pretending).
Lots of Portuguese ships.
Two British and one Brazilian ship were also docked there and started shooting at me. I sank them.

Is it normal to find Enemy ships in neutral ports? They were sitting ducks!

I went there, too. But my stupid gunners fired at and sunk a Portuguese tug and all hell broke loose from shore batteries.

I think it's probably normal, merchant traffic and all.
For a U-boat just after some fuel and beer it's a pain in the arse! Take Thalia at Cadiz for another example. Dang brittish ship docked there, for games sake I don't sink it because you know it will be there again anyhow. So now you get stuck taking a wide course killing time trying to get to the supply ship.

If this is really normal, then imo it's killing the game, because it's much easier to go to a harbour knowing there's ships than roaming the seas for a month.

Could this be fixed then?

Do the Portuguese have shore batteries at PD? I'm lucky then... I left Bernard handling the deck gun at PD while I went to get a beer.... Came back on deck and he'd sunk the tug. I cuffed him about the ears some and finished the Brits... but if I'd known they had short batts....

No different to you going into a harbour in the first place

Besides From August 43 its an allied base anyway

Just knocked off a medium tanker and a couple of small merchants in a neutral port on the way to my patrol area. Not a bad way of picking up some tonnage without the stress of escorts:up:

It also stops BDU from sending messages to me saying "Be more aggressive!":rotfl:

Yup, I also "DID" Ponta Delgardo last night with my IXB (June 1940).
Gunned a Mod Med Tanker and a coupla' smaller steamers and merchs. One was 'very very' close to a 'neutral' steamer - which also got hit accidentally by my chief Gunner (Bernard). Luckily it hadn't sunk by the time I was well away from port :-)
My advice: ONLY man the DG yourself if you're in a neutral port.

Also had a quick run into Casablanca (not much there) and Thalia/Cadiz. Had same probs as DanUrve has... P.I.T.A

Would like to have a look in Tangiers , but I think it will be instant death as so close to Gibraltar port!! (Maybe I'll have to ask K.Jochen Mohr to go there first and clear a route for me ?

I've also had a 'neutral nasty' when gunning a large convoy in '40 in BE grid (after feeding some eels to the escorting Rodney, Dido and a C & D destroyer). A quick check looked like all Merchies were Tommy , Canadian or Turkish, so I just set the gunners on close range and closest visual and drove around the pack to let 'em all have it - but there was just one poor single weak one little French Passenger/Cargo that I didn't see which happened to get licked.
Damn it!!!! (but they were French ... so it's fair anyway isn't it ? :-)

Happy Huntin' boys... (and Ms. Penelope)

Edited: for bad spelling (or too much beer)

I've just gone into Porto Delgado (June 41) to check up on this shore battery thing. I cannot see anything (Im there at 1300) and have popped one shell into a Portuguese tramper, with no response. Maybe they install them later, but as late as June 41, you won't risk return fire if you accidentally hit a local (renown, of course, is another thing).

Tonight i had brit merchie hanging around in port near Kiel canal inbound :hmm:
Okay....manned the deck gun, sailing slowly to this deserter.

Seconds later 2 Ju88 came in sight, closing in to him and blew him out of the dock. They stole my tonnage! :damn:

Wondering how this ship made it to germany in 1941...

There are no land units at Punto in GWX

The Br merc in Brunsbuettal was moved in 1.03 IIRC
Maybe 1.02

But not there any more either way

Seems that the brit merchie doesnīt know my GWX version (itīs 1.03). Iīll send a letter to the royal navy about that. :)

Yeah i've noticed a lot of Enemy Ships in Neutral Harbors. They don't give me a lot of trobule i just sink them once i enter the harbor.

Here are the actual rules governing neutral ports for this time period:
http://fletcher.tufts.edu/multi/texts/BH044.txt

Art. 16. When war-ships belonging to both belligerents are present
simultaneously in a neutral port or roadstead, a period of not less than
twenty-four hours must elapse between the departure of the ship belonging
to one belligerent and the departure of the ship belonging to the other.

Of course the game doesn't take this into consideration. In the interest of playing realistically, I never go into neutral ports (except Vigo, of course).

Interesting document. Rules out neutral harbor raiding entirely, if you are playing "authentic."

The British used the '24 hour rule' on the Graff Spee in Montevideo to allow more naval assets to arrive in preparation for her eventual sailing :arrgh!:

Back in 1864, when the USS Kearsarge found CSS Alabama in port reprovisioning at Cherbourg, France, US captain Winslow was careful not to enter the port, choosing instead to wait outside for captain Semmes to bring his ship out. Had he entered the bay, Semmes could have brought Alabama out first and escaped while Kearsarge was forced to wait the 24 hours required by law.

It was that incident that I think of whenever neutral ports are mentioned.

Here is a nice site with the commanders' correspondence (http://www.civilwarhome.com/kearsargealabamaduel.htm).
