Don't know about you guys, but I tend to role play each skipper. Some are aggressive, some cautious, some like hunting in shallow English coastal waters for the sheer daring of it, others just want a big sub and a trip to the Karibik. Some are Nazis, some just want to get through the war and go home.
Well, here's the latest, and I'm not sure how to handle it from a game standpoint.
My sucessful skipper is "retiring" to a desk job after 6 successful patrols. It's late 1940. He's based in France out of the 2nd Flotilla. I would like him to come back in Jan. 1945 in one of the new "wonder boats". (A great excuse to finally try an XXI! )
What's the easiest way to do this? I know how to edit renown to get myself a XXI, and I can "skip" ahead with SH3 Commander with a really looooong shore leave. Is there a way to edit the config files to get myself to Norway?
Also curious to hear if any others out there role play there skippers in the same way...

Yep,
Each of my Kaleuns has a distinct personality and approach
mostly it influences where I go and whether I specifically attack certain targets if given the opportunity.
I usually establish the Kaleun's character during the first patrol.
e.g: my gung-ho kaleun started om 1 september 1939 in kiel and went to Poland first, took out everything in the polish ports, mostly with the deckgun. by that time England was in the fight so instead of returning to base he went past Denmark and spent the rest of his eels and ammo in the North sea.
Second patrol was all the way around England, through strait of Dover and der Kanal. I even engaged and sunk several large ships with the deckgun in Der Kanal in broad daylight.
Third was going past Scapa and down the inside passage along the Hebrides, sinking anything in his path, even silly sailboats. the intent was to go through to the Irish sea and through Der kanal again, but I was out of eels by the time I reached AM53 so I went home the way I came.
My Mediterranean Kaleun is a lot more cautious but seems to have a grudge against the Cunard Line having sunk 3 of their biggest ships so far. if given a choice he will always target ships carrying troops first.
My Type II Kaleun is like chief Brody from Jaws "we're gonna need a bigger boat!"
He tries to come home with enormous amounts of tonnage (for a type II) just to spite BDU so they give him a type IX
One thing they all have in common though is that they'll always attack any capital ship dumb enough to chug along in a convoy at 7 knots because that's my personal pet peeve :arrgh!:
I think their character is mostly to do with my mood during the first patrol, if bad for some reason, the Kaleun turns out to be more aggressive and risk-taking:D if good I'm a lot more patient and sneaky, but once the pattern is established I do stick to it.
as to your means of getting to Norway: I'd wait until the flottila becomes active in 1942 somewhere, then transfer from your current flottila and do 1 patrol, then wait until the XXI is available.

Absolutely. I don't change the style for each too much, as I'm limited in that way. That said, I do consider each to be a separate person, with a real life. My habit is to run several careers side-by-side, from different flotillas with different boats, picking up each at the proper date. I did this with AOD and SH1, and I intend to do it with SH3 and SH4 when the time comes.
One career takes up all my time. So I have only one guy who will die and take the rap should misfortune strike.

Similar to Steve, I tend to base multiple careers around different theatres Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Black Sea etc. :arrgh!:
