Greets,
Previous SHI, II & III player, I just got my hands on SH4. Went through the forum ramblings and promptly applied patch 1.2 prior to start a new game, went straight for campaign thinking i would be familliar with the SHIII controls.
Apart from some keyboard shortcut changes .... it mostly seems the same (prettier and more oriental, of course).
I do however have a few questions:
You can now get targeting assistance on/off ... no more 'in between' settings. IE: having the assistance (and the triangle) turned OFF, yet be able to ask for a solution to your weapon's officer? I used to play like this in SHIII.
Were the following functions removed, because I couldn't find them:
(when in conning tower) : bearing/range to closest contact? This was usefull to get a rough range on a ship you were shelling. I had to go back & forth to the TBT & the gun... annoying!
Weather report?
A few comments:
When browsing the museum, there is no info at all on the subs? The lights settings is also dim, making it hard to see anything, any way to change the sun's angle in that view? Surface the subs ?
Am stuck in the office like most of us till the day's over... i'm sure I'll have a few to add during the next 10 hours ;)
First thing first. Go get one of the major mods, like RFB (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111770) or TTM (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=115258). Fixes quite the few bugs that exist in 1.2, and will give you a much greater experience. Personally I'd recommend the TTM mod. But don't trust me, try them both for yourself.
And then, welcome to SH4 :)
Ah, I know, wrong order. Sue me...
As for your questions, for continous bearing you can order your sonarman to that. And weather report you will find in the bridge menu. At the extreme right.
It was a bit confusing for me too in the start going from SH3 to SH4. Being used to accessing the actual officers for various this and that. But when you get used to the SH4 way of doing things, there is no going back.
Just stick with it and I am sure you will appreciate it. It makes a lot more sense now.
That said, I do miss the "personal touch" of SH3, not least all the knobs and buttons you could play with in the inside 3D view. But nonetheless, SH4 is the better game.
:arrgh!:

Thanks a lot Zylark!
I was planning to go through a "vanilla" run before aplying one of the major mods (have already been glimpsing at both mods features). I was a great fan of the GW mod in SHIII, so I will certainly use one of those in the future.
Thanks for the heads up on the diff function locations/menus... I know I should have gone thought the manual/training before starting the campaign, but I was eager just to get my feet wet after getting the box and wanted to save myself some time :)
One more question/remark: I have the game setup to use the imperial system, i noticed however that the gun ranges are displayed in meters. Quite some calculations to do 'on the spot' for my little brain... since the info in the TDC is shown in yards IIRC.
Let me recap:
1 NM = 1.8km
1 Km = ??? yards?

A quick estimation system goes like this...
If the shot sails over the top of the target your set up too far :p

:smug:
I tried that, but have old worn out eyes... 'um pixels are too small for me to notice properly if the shots are short or long.
(man... will this working-hour-day just be over with!!! *checks wristwatch*)

I'm not not a mod technician, but I can tell you that the techs are going to need some more information to help you:
What mod are you trying to install?
Are you using JSGME?
Did you unzip the files?
Did you extract them correctly?
etc
How did you install them?

as far as the light in the museum is concerned, go to the museum folder, then to museum.mis file,
open it with note pad and change the time from 6:30 to 12 noon.

I am using the mod enabler. i put each mod into a named folder in the MODS folder. JSGME says they are activated but i don't see them in the game. for example, the color hud is active but i don't see it.

No matter how much I looked, I was never able to find this. Solved it by editing the commands.cfg file (copy/pasted some parts from the SHIII one and got it working!). I avoid clicking on the watch Icon as that almost always get me a CTD.
Using the same method, I was able to get the watch officer give me a bearing to the closest visual contact. It works using the metric system, but when using the imperial system the distance reported seems to be way off.
