Call me whatever you want but I think it would have worked. Maybe not as effectively as hoped for but birds would associate a sub with food.

Yeah, I could see it working too. Not as well as Q ships, but it could have helped.

Well, I think it would have worked some of the time....
However, there would have been many false alarms and I doubt it would have been a wise investment compared to other ASW tactics.

Plus....It wouldn't work at night!

Definitely not the stupidest suggestion for ASW in WW1, the one about effervescent salt made to Jellicoe wins my vote as the most desperately stupid one!

The whole Project is outlined in "1914-1918, Submarines at War" by Richard Compton-Hall

Yeah...but IIRC it also entailed strapping a mine to their back
A bit like the dogs they used on the Eastern Front in WWII :yep:

Not a bad idea, I would rather have 1 million dead dolphins/dogs than 1 dead human.

I'd rather see neither killed....man often has a choice before he gets involved in warfare....animals seldom if ever do :nope:

You obviously don't know some of the humans I know.

Don't agree, never saw a dog kill another over their difference in beliefs.

I heard a story once about a boat that was given away by a flock of seagulls all standing on a floating wire in the middle of the ocean.

And bones ;)

Back on topic, sound like a fairly logical idea - I'll have to watch Coast on Sunday.

Dogs most definitely do kill each other over their beliefs just like any other social predator. It's just their beliefs aren't dressed up with fancy terms like humans are wont do do. To dogs it's just "if it's them or us, the pack is everything".

Really, I think if dogs could talk to us they would agree with Letum in principle, though not in proportion. The reason dogs and humans get along so well is that both species are willing to consider the other as part of their pack.
