On July 8, 1945, the crew of COD risked their lives to save 56 Dutch submariners from certain death at the hands of the enemy after their submarine grounded on Ladd Reef, deep in Japanese-controlled waters.
In the decades since that heroic rescue, the men of both submarines have been joined in a unique bond of friendship that blossoms today as COD is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of the enduring friendship between two great nations.
On July 8, 2007 at 3 p.m. a unique commemoration of the world’s only international submarine rescue will take place aboard the historic submarine COD docked in Cleveland’s Northcoast Harbor.
The event will include a brief program and a media-friendly reenactment of the 1945 transfer by boat of the Dutch flag to COD, complete with a deck gun salute.
