Hey, I played SH3 for a long time, but I only just got SH4 and I've got a few simple questions.
1:I am using the Porpoise class sub out of Pearl Harbor and I keep getting assigned missions around Japan, even though I have to keep the engines at 2/3 to get there and back on one tank of gas. One time I even got told to go patrol the East China Sea after I got to Japan even though I didn't even have half a tank left. Shouldn't the game take into account your fuel level before sending across the ocean?
2: When setting the running depth of a torpedo, is the dial in feet or meters?
3: Any easy fix for the torpedo markings disappearing when you cross the date line? That is annoying.
Thanks!

Hey there, and welcome to the forums! I'm pretty new 'round here myself, but here's a few answers that hopefully will help out a bit:
1. That's normal; you'll want to keep your speed around 10 knots surfaced to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. I think in stock SH4 the 2/3 speed setting ends up being around 12 knots, so you may want to kick it down a notch. You definitely don't want to be running at Ahead-Standard unless you've got some reason to be in a hurry, and keep the Ahead-Full and Ahead-Flank runs to a minimum 'cause they burn up fuel like there's no tomorrow. There are also a few mods that modify the fuel economy and maximum ranges for the subs to be more realistic, but I can't remmeber whether that involved increasing or decreasing the ranges from stock. :p
2. I've done some testing on this one personally, and determined that the torpedo depth dial does in fact change depending on whether you have the game set to "Imperial" or "Metric". When using Metric, the dial works in meters; when using Imperial, the dial works in feet. However, we currently have some spirited discussion and testing going on in other threads concerning the fact that most if not all of the ship draft values in the game are way off of what's listed in the recognition manuals (both printed and in-game). Also we're pretty sure that the "Contact/Influence" setting for magnetic detonations doesn't work at all. Your mileage may vary.
3. I'm not sure if there's a stand-alone fix for this, but I'm fairly certain that both of the two "super-mods" currently available for SH4 include fixes for this bug. These are Trigger Maru and Real Fleet Boat. (I'm running RFB 1.28 at the moment, myself) They're both aweseome and include lots of fixes like this among other improvements and gameplay changes. Each has a different philosophy and goal so you'll want to read up on 'em and see which one might be to your liking. You'll find a link to each sticky'd to the top of the SH4 Mods section. Otherwise, I believe this issue is on the list to be fixed in the upcoming 1.3 patch.
Good luck, and happy hunting!

1. Check in here for some ideas: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=116133&highlight=fuel+consumption
2. Answered
3. Triger Maru, one of the larger mods here, has a fix for this:
- Pearl harbor flotilla users rejoice! The International Dateline bug is no more! Well, sorta  Start outside the harbor, and you will now be placed about 140KM west of the IDL and midway. You will not cross the IDL until you decided to return to port. And at that point, the bug doesnt matter anymore. Note: You still have the option to start in harbor, but i wouldnt recommend it.

10... actually you set for 10 but you actually get around 9.x (x=.2 to .8) depending on sea state.
Which happens to coincide with the .dat files optimum duration.
There are a few mods which alter these values.
[exception S class which I believe is indeed 8kts]
