Well last night i was near this port and i decided "hey I wonder what the hunting grounds are like here?" So on the way i came across two ships. 1 tanker and 1 tramp steamer which i killed. So after this encounter i set course for that little inlit on the way in to the port, hoping to catch ships going in and out. Well luck would have it there were around 3-5 ships in a line according to my SO. It was night and pitch black when all the suddden 3 elcos and 2 armed trawlers come my way. I spent over 19 hours game time trying to get away from these things. well i got away and had to return due to unsafe damage. I guess my question is is have anyone been in this harbour? I hope to try some day going harbour jumping. BTW i am running GWX now and it is great. i cant get over it.

Sounds realistic to me. Portsmouth was the Royal Navy's main base, and no u-boat ever dared to go near it. It should be deadly every time if it's done right.

IM pretty sure if you get into portsmouth the water is SO shallow that you cant stay fully under it.

thanks for the info! i am addicted to the type IID and find it is very good at getting away because of its small size and quick dive time. is there a place i can find the depths of some of the harbors? I was thinking Bristol as it seems to have a big port. Any type of ship is fine. I would like to get a BB for sure. Coastal Command's job is to keep the Brits on their toes in their own waters. :arrgh!:

i will investigate it for you
but if im correct (and i hope im not) then i think every harbour has shallow deapths.
you sure you want a BB ? if yes... try Scapa Flow or Loch Ewe

edit: i remember bristol again... not much ships. there are subnets, small and medium merchie's, lightly guarded and such... however... this was on WAC so il investigate it anyway

First time I was off Africa and after finally finding Brest since I was told to return there I thought I would do a little duty free shopping in Freeport since I had not seen anything the whole trip. Saw the shallow water on the map and was going at slow and periscope depth as I went over it. Checked death under and was informed I had 39 so I upped to one third since I didn't want to be caught in shallow water at day break. Promptly ran aground and when I checked crew to set up repairs 90% were dead!!!!! Moved everyone I could to repairs and as soon as everything said repaired the dead ship pop up showed :(

Why does the maps not give a hint of the depth of the water, I have never seen a chart that doesn't have it?

There are very short islands in SH3 which are not visible on higher zoom in the Navigation-Map. In the North area of Hebrides in PQ34 or 36 i run into the ground with half speed and survived with only minimal damage. But i think this was with an modified boat.

"Seabed Repair Mod" or an equivalent UBoat-Keel modification and
"IX_3_turm_fix.rar" or "Turm_Fix.7z" which corrects a bug in Turm9c_3_hd.zon when use the original Turms are a "must have".

Why does the maps not give a hint of the depth of the water, I have never seen a chart that doesn't have it?

I can not answer this, since i'm not the producer.
But i think it has something todo with the low power of PCs at that time on one hand, and on the other hand with the lack of Data for the whole world.

The Navigation-map gives you a hint of the Water-depth in form of Colors.
GWX use a Nav-Map pencil with blue colored Markers at 17, 60, 90, 160 and 230m.

Greetings.
