If you've stopped smoking recently then you will get things like this happening; put another way, you have to have some side-effects to all those times you've given your internal organs a bonfire to play with.
Keep going ! Time heals !
Well in Wales you should be able o get a free prescription!

Just drink some non-caffinated drinks full of good vitamins, minerals, and carbs (like sprite for people in the US), lay down, and go to sleep. It'll go away.

Don't dismiss this one (I would replace the onion with 1-2 COMPLETE GARLICS) My mum used to give me this as a kid, was always good as new the next day...bad breath comes with the deal...of course ;)
Another good trick when you have a real bad throat pain, gargle with salt water :p

Oh well, great, so actually smoking was helping me keep colds away!? wow. I think it may be time to relapse, I will need all of my strength for the days to come!:rotfl:
Its been well over a month since I've abandoned my usual weekend routines.
have to say, feel like crap today. I feel as though I am here, but somewhere else too. I realyl feel bad and my joints are killing me. I'd lie down but I klnow I won't sleep and I'll get bored.

Joint pain now? You're starting to develop symptoms of the flu. Hate to say it, but you're going to feel like crap for a few days. Just eat liquidy stuff (the less solid food, the better), lie down, and take some asprin for your joints. Don't eat alot of chunky, hard stuff, and don't get a flu shot.
As for the smoking thing, I doubt it. According to you, you haven't smoked in a month. Any type of withdrawl symptoms would occur only in the first two weeks or so.

Well if you were successful in giving up smoking take note your getting sick cause your body is ridding itself of all that crap.
Its takes 5 yrs for your lungs and the rest of your organs that were affected by smoking to heal itself. And say you gave up smoking for 6 months then had a sneaky few smokes, it will take another 5yrs... All it takes is one ciggarette to do the damage again.
Thats what the doc told me. Maybe he was trying to scare me into giving up:hmm:
Might work cause im been thinking about what he said!

Only see a doctor if you have a rash like this:
"If someone is ill and gets a rash, do the 'Tumbler Test'.
Check for spots over the whole body.
If a glass tumbler is pressed firmly against a septicaemic rash, the marks will not fade. You will be able to see the rash through the glass. If this happens get medical advice immediately. It is harder to see on dark skin, so check paler areas. Remember someone who is very ill needs medical help even if they have no rash or a rash that fades.
IF THIS HAPPENS GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY".
Or any of the symptoms found on this website:
http://www.meningitis.org/symptoms/symptoms
Otherwise it's just Flu-which isn't great, but better than Meningitis.
Sorry - I'm a first aider;)

While that is generally true, it isn't always the case. My wife got Meningitis at the age 14 and the only symptoms she had was the classic "flu" symptoms. Her doctor sent her home saying she had the flu after a very brief visit and a basic checkout. My mother-in-law ended up taking her into the ER that night because she had a bad feeling and knew something was seriously wrong. One of the ER docs ran several tests and on a hunch decided to do a spinal tap for the test of Meningitis. She tested positive and spent a good week at the hospital. She could have very easily died as a result.
Bottom line: Don't screw around when it comes to your health. You are the one that knows your own body the best, and when you know something isn't right, see your doctor.

LOL yes she said there was one going about.
I told her I feel like achey joints, and my nose is sort of half-blocked, no runny nose. Told her I was coughing and chesty. Which she said could be attributed to not smoking anymore on the weekends like I was. I said I stopped well over a month ago and have done all my coughing, this is to do with me being ill, not smoking.
So she came to the conclusion its a virus going about as others have described similar things, so she told me to take it easy to relax and try to get some fresh air, I have a handy dandy cough medicine now to help. So I'm not hacking my lungs up.
Gee, how lucky are you? Having this fine little summer cold, while the rest of us are tasked with the onerous burden of summertime.
Do the vitamin C think like suggested; 250mg every couple hour. Your body will tell you when you need more, i.e., you'll get all achey and chilly. Within 20 minutes of taking some vit C you'll get this wave of warmth that'll come over you. When you start to feel better, don't stop taking it (you'll relapse worse than you were originally - and for longer than otherwise too), but just start extending the times between doses.
You'll know when you're taking too much vit C, you'll get a loose stool. But if you eat really well, lots of vegatables, i.e., roughage, you may not notice this. Never take more'n 250mg vit C at one time (its too hard on the stomach). IF you're taking vit C, make sure you consume enough fluid to generate 2 qt of urine per day (that's only double normal output) minimum. Its a little known fact that most people are typically dehydrated on a normal day to day basis. Then when they feel rundown and tired because they're dehydrated, they drink coffee or tea, which only dehydrates them even more.
Obtain some zinc lozanges. Zinc citrate or gluconate is the preferred form, although zinc picolonate is acceptable too (forget the other form of zinc). The lozenges are formulated with 23mg zinc & 60mg vit C, and perhaps eschinachae. You're supposed to suck on the lozenges. Trust me, you'd rather suck on zinc citrate/gluconate than zinc picolonate (blech!). Follow the directions exactly. Take the zinc lozenges for like two days (2 1/2 days max). Then like every other day take one. This will help address chest congestion. You have to be careful with the zinc, because if a side affect will be chest congestion. However, this is the good type of congestion. Zinc is an essential nutrient for the production of macrophages. Macrophages are scavanger white cells. You want those cruising around your system and in your lungs. They eat damaged cells (especially weak and injured killer T-cells that have been busy consuming virus that's been tagged by antibodies).
Supplement your mega-dose of vit C with 1/2 a high-B complex every day. That and consuming sufficient fluids to urinate two quarts per day will minimize whatever small (but real) risk there may be for kidney stone formation inherent with mega dose regemin of vitamin C. But as a prophalactic one shouldn't be concerned too much with that. Kidney stone formation becomes a significant concern with taken for long periods of time (months and months).
Vit C is water soluble, so whatever can't be absorbed will flush overboard. 98% of vitamin C is stored in the white blood cell. The remaining 2% goes into solution in the plasma, the remainder is flushed overboard. Its been demonstrated empiracally that white blood cells in an acidic solution are more mobile and aggressive than otherwise.
My suggestion is to avoid taking cough suppressant in the morning. Taking an expectorant will assist in that regard. Avoid cough suppresants until after lunch. Try to be outside in the morning when you're doing all your coughing. Typically coughing is worst first thing in the morning. So you want to work with that, not againt it.
Spray copious quantites of aerosol disinfectant frequently around the domicile. Soak your teethbrush in a sodium hypoclorite solution, i.e. 1 tsp/ 8 oz water or so. Rinse well before using. Snot rags go into the toilette, and not the trash bin. The snot dries out and whatever virus it contains will aerosolize when you dump the trash.
Finally, feed a cold and starve a fever. If you start to get chills, check for a fever. If you have a fever, take a hot shower (as hot as you can stand it for 10 minutes). Then dry off completely, take some vit C and then jump under the covers. Do this everytime you get the chills. If you wake up and the covers are soaked, change them immediately, take a hot shower (as hot as you can stand it), take some vit C, and then jump under the covers. Once you start to get hot, but not sweating (and without the chills), then the fever has broken and you're on your way to recovery. DO NOT abate suddenly taking the vitamin C no matter how well you feel. You MUST wean yourself off of it like a junkie.
A normal maintanance of vitamin C is 250mg every other day or so, or the equivalent or 1/2 gallon of OJ (or equivalent/day). That's just maintenance dose. AS SOON AS ONE FEELS SOMETHING COMING ON, that's when the maintenance dose should be doubled without hesitation. If symptoms progress, then keep doubling the dose until one is taking vit C every 1/2 hour, or they get the Hershey's Squirts. By then one is truly sick, and I mean that with a capital I.
Primates are the only animals that don't produce vit C and rely on sufficient intake of appropriate dietary sources. Other animals such as dogs and cats have been demonstrated to produce in excess of 10g of vit C per hour in their livers during times of intense stress, illness and especially trauma. The MRDA for vit C is 60mg (that's a lot of OJ as it is). This is absurdly low and is the minimum to prevent scurvy. Scurvy is a symptom of deficiency, and the MRDA says nothing about how much is actually needed for optimum bodily function. Vit C is a critical component necessary for the formation of collagen; that's connective tissue.
It won't hurt to supplement one's short-term regimin of megadose vit c with a capsule of beta carotene and some vit E. Both of these are anti-oxidants, and beta carotene is the precursor to vit A. Both have implicated functionality with respect to the immune system.

I went to the doc a while back because I had lost the hearing in my left side. I thought it was probably just an ear infection, but losing ones hearing can prompt a little action on ones part. Anyway, the good doc tells me he cant tell what the problem was because it was all inflamed and infected......?!?!?!?!?
Here, take these antibiotics, the probably won't do anything, but they might......

Yeah but, some doctors would blame the common cold on smoking if they could. So I'm always dubious when if you are unwell and you go to a doctor and say so, they ask do you smoke, and if you say yes, most will be "there's your reason"
I am dubious is due to my friend, not the other one who I told you guys before is pregnant. The one I grew up with, she smoked precisely, one cigarette in her entire life. Only the one. I started smoking the day after my 16th birthday once I became legal, and just for the record, even though I had one more year of school left to go and GCSE's to sit, I never smoked in school ever and kept my weekend routine. It was cigars I went for when I got going as my father smoked cigars and I was having one or two on a weekend, I quite enjoyed them I admit. 6 months after I started to smoke I eventually got round to smoking a couple of menthol cigarettes, my mother suggested I not smoke a cigar when out with my mates so it was a good idea, and I quite liked menthol cigs.
Anyway, the point is, my friend, she never smoked before in her life. She asked could she try a cigarette. So I gave it to her without any fuss because if it was fine for me, it woudl be fine for her I assumed. So she sat smoking this one cigarette (properly too I may add) at the end of it, she threw up and was sick. She never touched another cigarette or anything that could be smoked after that, it was her first and last.
Fast forward 2 years later, she goes to the doctor with problems in her chest. What does the doctor ask her? "Do you smoke?" "no" she replies, and the doctor had to refer her because he didn't know what the cause of her chest complaints was. Turns out she had a abnormality with her heart and was making her feel unwell. Had she took up smoking that day, he would have just told her to cut down or quit.
Hence, since then I have been of the mind, yes smoking causes a LOT of problems, but I hardly think its the cause of EVERY health complaint, doctors are far too quick to use it as a scapegoat.
