View Full Version : SH4 Related kinda, gaming rig build FYI
Hi guys,
After 2 seperate motherboard purchases I still find myself annoyed with my current build. Why? This will be 9th system I built and I have never ran across such bad products.
The ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe mobo cant raid for nothing, spent a month trying to set it by myself and with ASUS tech support and by then I could not return it, $230+ out the window.
And Intels D975XB BX2 mobo, is so picky with memory, that it cant be over 1.9 volts and i cant have certain number of chips on each side of the module! another $230+ out the window.
My DDR2 800 Mhz OCZ Plat Revision 2 for some reason is not compatible. I highly recommend you guys stay clear of these boards. My OCZ ran great on the ASUS, however windows refused to raid a thing on that board. A total of $460+ of lessons learned. I hope this helps someone avoid major headaches and saves you money.
OCZ has a engineer working on this for me all the while I get excuses from Intel about the issue, and finger pointing.
Good Hunting,

Running a EVGA 860i since late Dec 2006...not 1 single glitch so far. Had some small issues with the BIOS the 1st weeks but after EVGA fixed that all is well.
Oh and the manual had all the SATA connectors mixed up (1 was 6, 2 was 4 etc etc), took me almost a day checking forums and what have you to figure that one.

Good Hunting,
Actually I have run the Intel D975BX2 with EXACTLY the memory you have. I just upped the voltage to 2.2 or 2.3 from what I remember and set the correct memory timings in accordance with OCZ guidlines. The CPU was a QX6700. I am not absolutely certain that the board was rev 2 tho.. It was a couple of months ago now.
Hope that helps!

MSI 975x Platinum accepts a wider range of memory than the Intel 975x board. Haven't tried the RAID options yet. But so far so good.
Price is about $200

Excuse me for not getting the short list of working memory, that is my fault.
Excuse me for insulting ASUS, hopefully the thread on the asus site talking about raid problems with the deluxe are not a problem.
If you respond to a post, provide nothing of value, just insults, then dont even bother to respond no one wants to read the garbage.
I could easily post the responses I received from Intel and ASUS, however I wont, I am not here to bash anyone or insult them either.
P.S. I work for some CO mentioned above.

Thanks for the info, Ill check out some reviews on it, I might wait for the ASUS P5KC though. Supports DDR2 and DDR3 and up coming processors like the Penryn aswell as the current.

What were the timings exactly? OCZ emailed 3 or 4 different settings already. On the BX the memory supported is 667 and 533mhz on BX rev 2 its 800, 667,and 533 mhz. Does that help?

and your point is ?..the p5wdh deluxe won't raid for nothing ? ahhem...yeah..ok...if you say so ...
"If you respond to a post, provide nothing of value, just insults, then dont even bother to respond no one wants to read the garbage.
if i was the one who posted the thread to start with i guess i would of asked the folks who use the same motherboard for advice ..instead of telling folks the motherboard is useless and a waste of money.. a little pre build research may have or could have prevented the whole mess to start with.. and as per your own admission you did not do your research correctly per system build ..so as far as reading garbage.. I revert you sir to your original post. Its not the hardwares problem.. its lack of research before building the system "your 9th" point in fact my system raid zero running on asus p5wdh deluxe your system still born. Thank You ! anything else you would like to know ?
Again I quote your lack of research or knowledge of the hardware you intended to work with created your own problems.. not vendor induced garbage. As far as excusing you for not getting the list of working memory or insulting asus thats on you not the product.

I would like to be more help but I don't want to put anything I'm not absolutely certain about since it would just mislead you. All I can remember is:
There were actually two identical systems@
Intel 975BX2, OCZ Platinum memory 800 V2, 4gb, 8800GTX, RAID 0 Drives (of some sort)
Both systems crashed installing Vista 64 bit. Turned out that the BIOS didn't work properly with QX6700 and Vista 64, worked okish if dual core disabled (which actually meant the QX6700 ran dual core only rather than quad core.. New BIOS fixed the problem but Vista still crashed.. Much head scratching.. Tried Kingston RAM.. same problem.. But then stumbled across the board running the RAM at 1.8 or 1.9v.. can't remember which. Went to OCZ site and found the specified settings for the ram.. Noticed something along the lines of 2.2 to 2.3v. Slotted in the correct timings and I'm pretty sure 2.2v (no CPU overclocking) stress tested both systems for 2 days with Memtest - fine. Then 3 days with Prime95 running 4 times (1 per core) - fine. If I was to hazard a guess I would GUESS that the boards were rev 2. but I am NOT certain.
I have to say that the system next to me (my older son's) has a P5wdh deluxe, 2no. Samsung 500gb RAID 0. Works fine. Think you have been rather unlucky!

What exactly can't you "raid" on the Asus board? You say, "Windows refused to raid a thing", so is the board not setting up the array or is it WinXP that isn't seeing it?? I use ASUS boards and have never had a problem with them. With that said, I've probably used 16+ motherboards from them. So I doubt it was the board *not* doing the RAID, but the user.
