Knowing AMC, it will the dubbed version and cut to crap with commercials. That channel is a pale shadow of it's former self. :nope:

Probably my favorite part of the film. The Tipperary Song. It won't make me the King of England!!

That's the strangest thing about Das Boot.

I have the (sony, please don't shoot me) "Super Bit" edition. It's the Director's Cut, 117 minutes or so. Then there's a 137 minute Director's Cut. Then there's the screen 93 minute version.

And they all have completely different subtitles. I mean, the chief engineer says "assh-le" in one version, and "lunatic" in another. Is it "assh-le" or is it "lunatic", because those two words have seperate meaning in English.

It's the whackiest movie I've ever seen, even above "Aliens" and Star Wars movies (original, remastered, special edition, meow skywalker, etc.).

Well, translations are always fun.
I took a course two years ago on Anglo-Irish literature. One of my papers was on translations, and how meaning can be shifted due to the idiosyncracies of translation. Reading three different translations of four texts was pretty wearing, but now I can't stop it! I've got different versions of almost every translated book I like :)

I have a couple of versions of Das Boot, and the (crappier) VHS dubbed version I have, which I bought many years ago when it was the only one available, actually says 'manuel' (i.e. the Spanish name) on the subtitles when it should read 'manual' (as in 'switch to manual'), which gives you an idea of how crappy some subtitles can be.

:D Chock

well i just finished watching it and i must say that was somthing else. It was intersting to see how they portrayed the german nazi's in a society that wants nothing to do with their history of nazism. How does it legaly haves swastikas in the movie, arnt they illegale in germany, or did they do a different version?

I'm curious about that - maybe a German can enlighten me?

Wiki says...

The German (and Austrian) postwar criminal code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strafgesetzbuch) makes the public showing of the Hakenkreuz (the swastika) and other Nazi symbols illegal and punishable, except for scholarly reasons.

On the other hand I've seen these feature prominently in a number of high-profile German movies (notorious for their anti-war attitudes) - including Das Boot, Stalingrad and Der Untergang :hmm:
