I don't usually give war time patrol stories but this one was way too different. Comming back from a photo recon mission and run into a fast moving Destroyer that has for some reason already spotted me, (Glitch of time compression I guess). Anyway, I sound G.Q., order a crash dive, but then figure I'd try and get a few fish on him first since he was still about 6000 yards out. Set 3 stern fish at him and crash dive, searching for a thermal and turning 90 degrees starboard. I cut engines to 1/3, hit run silent and at about 200 ft go all stop.

Well, I have one of the new handy dandy realism mods on and this Jap is good, VERY good. After he drops about a dozen pills on me he finally gets his depth right and I start taken major damage. DCC is reporting all compartments flooding, pumps offline and among it all, we are out of COFFEE!!!. Well, I'm now re-living the scene from U-571 where I have no choice to emergency blow at 9 knts, knowing that tin-can is up there waiting to see my conning tower. Well, we surface and just as I swing to the stern to line up that "one shot" to end this he starts firing like crazy AND is only about 300 off my port side. I man up the deck gun and start shooting back.

Amazingly I get several hits on him but he comes racing up my port side until he collides with me (gawd I wish we had a collision alarm, and a "ALL HANDS BRACE FOR COLLISION!!"). Well, to end this story, he's unable to fire at me because apparently his guns will not trian that low, however I continue to fire away until he finally blows up. I limp ahead and spend the next two days floating at 2 knts while repairs are made. I wish I had a movie of it because that had to be the most entertaining thing I been through.

Well, just my time in the game, all take care and have fun.

P.S. No sailor's drowned trying to get air back to the torpedoes.

P.S.S. We were also out of Toliet Paper, which after this encounter was needed BADLY!

Good thinking and brave.

Fourtune favors the brave  good job.

I dont know if I got caught with my pants down like that Id dig for the thermal layer and zip it up.

I'm fresh outa Pimp talk, however I referenced U-571, since what had occured during the mission reminded me of a specific moment in that movie, not Das Boot. This story was'nt about "What's pimp'n", but something exciting that I had experienced. "My bad" if you misunderstood and figured this was a "What movie was better" thread. However, to reply to that, I actually enjoyed BOTH movies.

Nice battle story.

It might have come out quite different with no or little damage to yourself if you had kept moving instead of all stop. All the DD had to do was drop enough cans on your last detected position. You can use speeds less than 1/3 and slip away making a lot less noise and you can retain your turn manouvering. 30 degrees is the best evasive turn during the 1st DC run while you are still slowing rather than 90. 90 slows you down too much and makes you vulnerable to the typical DC drop patturn where there are at least two cans dropped one to either side of the suspected track. After an initial 30, get a little distance and make successive 60s. Sitting still when the DD knows where you are is futile. Even though you are still making a little noise at slow speed, at least you are turning, changing depth, and moving away from the drop patturn. Keeping the DD guessing every moment is cruicial.

The only times in over 20 years of playing sub sims sitting still had any advantage at all is when I wasn't yet detected and I was waiting in a favorable position for an opening. The other use for it is when you know the DDs are dropping on their best guess a little ways away and you don't want them to hear where you really are. When being attacked, if you keeep moving (even if it's nearly a dead crawl) the DDs are dropping on where you WERE rather than where you ARE.

Hehe, he dodged all of the fish, however succumbed to my gunnery. I think the most damage was done when he came along side and hit me (still don't understand the DD -vs- Sub = Sub Wins thing). Anywho, what i thought was the most amazing part was when we was comming alongside, it looked very real, almost as if he was intentionally trying to ram me.

Thanks Pv, I will try that during tonights patrol. I'm still a newbie when it comes to evasion, I usually dive deep and cross my fingers : ).
