Hi
I have recently discovered Subsim.com (again) after a few years of being distracted by other trivial things as girlfriends, work and more work...
Last time i visitied Subsim was back when SH2 and DC was just release, and i used to love playing both games online, as you all might know, a uboat captain can only spend so much time on land before the urge to go back to sea sets in, and that is where my problem is:
During the time that i have been away from the seas, i have missed both SH3 and now SH4. So my question is which one should i get (or is the answer simple, Both)?
Cheers

SH3 for atmosphere and SH4 for graphics

You gotta get both....
SH3 if you want to play U-Boots and SH4 if you want to play silent service submarines. As simple as that :yep:
Yeah both...
But SH3 first if you wanna spread out the spending. You could live for a month or two easy on SH3 alone.

My choice: SH3.Your choice: compare the technical conditions both sims are in, and then make your choice.

It depends also on your hardware and whether you want to invest into new hardware.
example:
SHIII need a graphic card which supports shader up to 1.4
SHIV need a card with shader 2.0 as minimum
There are many threads in forums where customers bought SHIV and ask why they get an error message concerning shader's and SHIV does not run. The reason is, they did not consider the system requirements and still use a graphic card of the GeForce4 or Radeon 9500 generation in their PC.:stare:

I agree with TDK1044: SH3 for atmosphere, SH4 for graphics.

Gotta agree here. I like both of them, perhaps I'm being a wee bit too patriotic here, but when I was playing SH3, I always had a hard time rooting for my own side ("Nazis") after sinking an allied convoy, and often said to myself, "Damn, I wish these were American boats!" . Now I feel more satisfied when sinking ships in SH4.
YEAH!
P.S. Nothing against Japan or Germany, (at least not these days) it's just hard to not root for the home team. I don't wish to offend anyone here, certainly not my intention. :sunny:

I used to play AOD and SH1 at the same time...well, not exactly the same time, but alternating missions according to date. So even though I can't play right now and have yet to touch SH4, of course I have to say BOTH!

If one starts on SH IV, he will find SH 3 annoying. This is my case. 3 feels cluncky after the smooth polished experience of 4. And there was something about that clunkyness that prevented any kind of immersion. It was all just run around-shoot spread-hit return to base. Repeat.

Both are great games in their own right. Sh3 does feel like a step back in some ways after playing SH4 - mostly in the eye candy department and overarching campaign mechanics. But SH3 is honestly more "matured" - especially once modded with stuff like GWX. Sh4 has not been fully patched - so there are still some major bugs to deal with, AI being one of the main ones. Another 6 months or so - and SH4 may have matured enough to be truly more immersive than SH3 - but that will only occur after the modders create the additional depth that they did with SH3.
Answer - Both - but dont compare em to each other - yet.

SH3 is better as far as gameplay and being emmersive...
SH4 is better looking, and seems to have better physics..
If you took SH3 and gave it the graphical upgrade.... wow... :)

SH 3 WITH GWX:up:
SH III + GWX is a polished and nicely tuned game, well worth playing
SH IV is a diamond in the rough, unfinished so far, but playable, and very very goodlooking! Maybe someday it will be as complete a game as its predecessor....
(the modders made SH III what it is, UBI only laid the foundation, looks like SH IV will be the same)
