Planes have sonar now ?

Last night we had finished a photo recon mission and I witnessed two strange occurances.

We laid in the deeper water at a dead stop for several hours waiting for daylight and studying the pickets patterns. Once the sun came up we worked out an approach when the pickets would be the furthest away.

The recon was of a carrier TF we got the picture(s) just fine and set up some shots. I fired 4 torps at the one carrier and set up on the other. The plan was to fire off the remaining 2 fore tubes and the come about quickly to bring the rear tubes to bear.

With the two fore tubes launched we began our turn. Well about this time the first 4 impacted the first carrier and down she went. As we were working out the solution for the aft tubes the 5th torpedo found her mark and Kablooeee the second carrier went in a ball of fire ! One single torpedo !... sunk a carrier :o the 6th impacted as well but she was already in flames and sinking. (sorry I dident ID the targets).

We slinked out of the bay as the pickets raced to where we 'were' and searched fruitlessly.

We sailed out of visual range of the pickets and surfaced to phone in a report. The report was recieved and we got further orders.

Just to be safe we submerged again to avoid air attacks untill sunset. We had run for several hours at TC of around 256. About this time my wife came into the room to 'chat' so I put the view to exterior and let the game run at 1x while talking to her. As we were talking I hear the familiar drone of aircraft engines and all of a sudden BOOM ! BOOM !.

"Are you being attacked ?" my wife asked ? "I dont know" I replied. What the hell were at 165' running at 1/3 and had been there for hours. If they were trying to bomb me there waisting their time. How in the heck did they find me ?

Are you sure you weren't leaking oil? :hmm:
Maybe your wife gave your position away. Was she splashing around alot?

I know that in some situations, an aircraft can see fairly deep in the water, but I don't know exactly how deep that is. Maybe they somehow triangulated your position from your radio report and were 'pattern bombing'.
You must have really made them mad in any case. :up:

I don't think they have sonar, but they may have a MAD if it's later in the war... I know they did have that IRL anyway..

Seriously though, I know what "MAD" is, but was not aware the Japanese had it. If that was/is modeled in this game, that is awesome! AND would explain how they found you.

I am currently working a photo recon of Osaka Harbor and it's a SOB. I'm trying to sneak in, and some DDs seem to unexplainably be finding me, although I'm deep and slowly approaching. I'm on my third attemp now!

If you can get fairly close undected check up and do a little preperation.

Study his 'pattern' they follow a specific course when not prosecuting. Wait till he is near and moving away then make your move. By the time you get to your 'target' he may well quite some distance off. It takes patience and can be really tricky when 2 or 3 pickets are running. Note that this can take some time as much as 12 hours or so to nail down there circuits and find an opening.

Oh if you decide to attack the target. Make sure your already on your way out before the first torpedo strikes.

That being said some of the recon missions are absolute suicide espically when you run into Bungo Pete which seems to be your case. If that case use your disgression and proceed with caution (saves ;) ).

Thanks for the tip. BTW, I'm familiar with the "Bungo Straits", but where is it exactly? I can't find it on the the map and have even tried a "google" with no success.

If I have read this correctly then June 43 was when congressman May let slip that the japanese were setting the Dcs to low and reading the piece below, it says "In addition to resetting their DCs they alos began to use AGs and MAD. So I take it that means after June 43 when they started using Autogyros and MAD!
