View Full Version : IJN DD's blow themselves up when about to attack my sub...bug?

Hey all, I've got another issue i'd like to check with the community to see if it's isolated with me or is a common bug...

I use fleetboat 1.28 with other minor mods, and realism at 100% short of external views.

So far this has happened to me 3/5 times: I'm maneuvering at periscope depth just after sinking some merchants in a convoy, either reloading or recalculating a new firing solution and the escorts are busy trying to find and kill me. So one DD drops his charges at a spot where he thinks i am, and as soon as the charge hits the water, it blows up. It's as if it's set too shallow (for a sub at periscope depth?) and either blows off his depth charge rack, or more often just plain sinks himself with that one fatal blow.

This has happened to me in a campaign and on some random war patrol. Even when the dd has a fix on me, and literally drops right on my position, this will happen and he'll blow his own arse up and i'll be just fine.

Note that this doesnt happen all the time, but does in the majority of my encounters thus far.

Just need to know if anyone else gets this issue where DD's are damaged or destroyed by their own charges...

...So far in my few weeks of playing this sim, i have been attacked by depth charges, but never sunk nor badly damaged. I know that if i surface i can take down a destroyer in a deck gun duel. If i attack a convoy at periscope depth and running flank speed, i am essentially invincible due to the fact that dd's will either blow themselves up or be totally oblivious to my whereabouts. Not to mention the fact that at the mere sight of trouble, merchants will slow themselves down to a nice 2 knots everytime, making themselves easy targets (and giving me less math to do in shooting  ). I hope to hell that 1.3 will actually fix these issues or a brilliant mod maker will save the day, 'cause right now this is WAAAY too easy even on 100% difficulty---I often find myself disengaging convoys simply because i feel like i'm gaming the game too much.

Anywho, thanks for the input all--happy hunting! :p

DDs are retarded, plain and simple.

Low level AIs will blow themselves up if your sub is above periscope depth and due to the collision mode you can stay jsut a few meters under - enough so they can't gun you. Elite AI will simply pass by at flank speed, drop a charge and sink you. Just like that.

I just came from a game where the DDs were havign a party while I was taking out a whole task force: 1 Mogami, 2 Aganos and 6/8 Small Passenger Carriers ($#|@ mk14 :damn: ). All they did was converge in on one location then try and figure out how to use reverse to resume patrol. Or something. Meanwhile my Porpoise was grazing the seabed at 47m, running 2knots and loading torpedos.

You are right on about all those issues. I experience every single one.
Rant on:
And don't let anyone tell you that mods like RFB or the HorsePower fix will make the game better (as far as those bugs are concerned). RFB is a wonderfully complex collection of mods that does add a whole bunch of stuff, and make the game much more realistic and satisfying, but the merchies still slow down to 2 knots, the DDs still blow themselves up, and everything is pretty much the same game. They did fix the Deck Gun > all problem by simply making it Deck Gun < all.

Bottom line: You'll probably have to live with it, or uninstall. I uninstalled because I didnt want to hate the game. I'll reinstall with 1.3 to see if that fixes anything...

Anyway, I'm glad that you posted this because often when I tried to mention it and ask for help, I got the reply "I've never heard of this" or "try Real Fleet Boat"

Then, of course, when people post rant threads (which I apologize for doing right now), complaining vocally about the obvious problems with the game, they are usually minimized or sidelined by the hardcore supporters who just won't hear anything that isnt praise. I whole-heartedly support Ubisoft and their attempt to make a sub sim. I personally love sub sims, and havent gotten my fill since I played AOD waaaaay back. or even the old Nintendo-based Silent Hunter.

Debate about historical accuracy, tactics, or equipment is totally healthy for the fan community, and I have spent many a sick-day sitting here and reading the forums, though not posting as much as I would have liked.

But this game has serious, serious problems, and I'm not going to play it until Ubisoft fixes them, and I'm not going to listen to one more person say that its "actually a marvelous game." A marvelous beta, perhaps, full of grandiose promise, but...

Who charges $50 for a beta?

Worse yet, the fantastic (and I mean incredible) community here at subsim, to whom I give reverent thanks for this forum, their many, many excellent mods, and constant intriguing debate, may actually have been expected to shoulder the burden of finishing this game. And I say, politely, and with utmost respect

**** that.

It is a known issue with RFB....

Throwing 'other mods' into the mix can exaggerate the problem(s).

Dont be so fast to condem the core engine.

I've had patrols where the DDs are all over me, and I've had others where it's like they're all on coffee break while I'm blowing up their convoy.

I think the spread between high skill level (4?) and low (0 I think?) is way too much. 4 is like Bungo Pete from hell, and 0 is like the crew left their brains back in port. Unfortunately a lot of the campaign AI seems to be set to the lower end.

ALL of the convoy AI is set to 1 or 0. All of it.

The TF AI is mostly set 3-4. There might be a few 2s in the whole game. Very few.

I would love to see a mod that resets the convoy AI (and solo DDs) to ranges between 1-3, with a couple of 4s mixed in. 0 is virtually useless.

I'm considering doing it myself and tuning it to my taste, but I have no idea where to start.

I've decided to rename my Porpoise: the Destroyersweeper. Seriously. I feel like a minesweeper doing 9knots at 12m underwater, ramming into every DD I see. I cleared a whole taskforce of DDs, then proceeded to try various torpedo settings on the BBs and cruisers still around.

And that is why I have changed in all campaign files AI of all enemy (including merchants) to vet and elite...

I have done many test missions and single patrols but NO campaigns.
I feel that once a full mod is made of all the campaign layers to something
more realistic, I will then venture into a campaign. The game now wants to
use way to many AI ships that are only in the late war and then were only used in
limited numbers. Also, many of the WW2 ships of the pacific are just plain missing from the game. SH3 was the same way out of the box and the modders
made it the expert game it is today....

I have the same problem with escorts blowing themselves up, though I run the latest version of Trigger Maru. Obviously it is not a bug in RFB or TM, but in SH4, even when patched to 1.2. Hopefully, 1.3 will cure this and several other annoying bugs.

Yeah, when you are at PD, they set the charges shallow. Since they detonate based on depth, BOOM. AI isn't smart enough to make sure it gets out of the way.

Are Escorts still blowing themselves up for everyone else?

Or is it just me?

Playing 1.4.

1.4 stock? If so, I would recommend 1.5 U boat add on, and one of the super mods: TMO or RFB.

Tried TMO and RSRD, but still the escorts sank themselves.

Seriously, I stopped playing SHIV years ago, because the bugs were absolutely ridiculous.

Not much seems to have changed, to be honest.

1.4 stock and with TMO1.4 that hasnt happened to me. Although one destroyer has sunk after reversing over its charges but that was to avoid beaching itself. (got suprised in horribly shallow water and tried to escape by getting close to shore- only option open! Worked suprisingly)

I have been playing RFB for a year now and I have still to see escorts sink themselves.

For a while now (since 1.5 came out) TMO and RFB are not compatible with 1.4 version of the game.

Play 1.5 with TMO plus RSRD and haven't seen it since playing stock where it was silly. I often run into large convoy 30-50 ships, large TF, both with many DD's and I can't even remember the last time this happened.

I may have seen this happen once in many, many hours of simming. Went to F11 to see what was happening topside and one of the escorts had a small fire at the stern and one depth charge rack was missing. One of the DDs was firing his guns - at what I couldn't tell you - and that may have been what damaged that tin can. I've never seen a DD sink itself. Ever.

I have v1.5 and I've been running RSRD since I started driving subs.

I played 1.4 stock and then with TMO for about 8 months and never saw this.
Check your version number, lower right in the menu screen.
Maybe 1.4 patch didn't take.

OK, I uninstalled and reinstalled and patched to 1.4. It says so in the bottom right! :DL

I also tried RFB.

So far all seems well, but I haven't actually seen any escorts in my first sortie! On the second one now.

Playing DeadisDead. My first real SHIV campaign.

Out of the curiosity, which RFB version is compatible with v1.4?

I'm using RFB_v1-4_031408 and it seems ok so far.

Had a quickrun on my laptop some days ago. Its a clean SH4 1.5 installation, playing U.S. side, 84% realism.

Two DD's sunk themselfs by ramming me. One of them broke in two, after running over my sub... My sub was seriousely damaged with hulldamage of 59% and some primary subsystems destroyed. I missed to use my electric propulsion on the surface, once again, since one of my diesels was destroyed, and weirdwise, couldn't run surfaced, althought the second diesel was ok!?
