Where did this data come from ?
I generally draw an 80 mile circle around the target and stay within that. It works for me.

I use a fifty mile radius. Some use 100 from what I've seen.

I've always used a 100 mile radius without fail. I just make sure I surface when first entering the patrol are or else it seems not to claculate your time patroling correctly.

I've had the 100nm radius work for me each time.
Before patch 1.1 I got a message when entering a patrol area and it was somewhere between 55 and 60 miles radius. I've been using 60 miles ever since. That message has never reappeared.

You can use the compass in the lower left corner of the Nav map screen (F3) to draw a circle of a particular radius.

Cant say I blame you.
For what its worth the english version of the manual is more or less worthless.
