These are some antique times where this would have mattered. There are other things which can make your PC's perfomance drop, and they do it rapidly. Even so many Icons on the Desktop shouldn't really matter. Don't know about that bloated Vista stuff but a Computer that runs SH3 properly shouldn't feel any big difference in using a wallpaper or not. It's a matter of preference though.

As I said before, I used to have almost 550, but then reduced to what I use the most.... As for the keeping track, that's easy, I know the name of the shortcut, say Microsoft Word, and I press once any icon and press M on the keyboard until I find it...
I like my PC to be functional and operational, not eye candy....
And wallpaper is from Crysis.... Consider that game Far Cry 2... Go google it...:yep:

@ GakunGak

An IT guy at my office was telling me that loading the desktop with icons has some sort of adverse affect on memory or something...

So now that rattles round in my head whenever I get too many icons on the desktop. I've got one "games" folder on the desktop that holds all my game icons. Honestly, I've never really noticed any difference though...

I think the most interesting part of this thread is seeing what icons others have installed!

I saw someone still had Fleet Command and Mech Commander 2 installed

Hi Gakun (and aaronblood),

I'm an IT guy and the number of icons on your desktop would not have a measureable effect on your performance. And the actual size of the files on your desktop has absolutely no effect at all on performance

Desktop wallpapers don't eat up that much memory. If your screen resolution is 1280x1024x32 then that works out to a bitmap of nearly 4mb. Not really that much when you probably have 1 or 2 gb of memory.
And also, when you are playing a game fullscreen windows is smart enough to notice nothing has used that chunk of memory for a while and the bitmap for your wallpaper will be paged out to your swapfile so the memory is freed up to be used by your game - you might notice this when you alt-tab back to your desktop or quit the game, windows has to page the wallaper back in and sometimes you may see it actually get drawn. This is a good reason to NOT disable your paging file... if you have then windows can't swap your wallpaper out to disk, meaning you effectively have 4mb less memory available for your game :yep:

Very nice pics - just snagged the top one for my desktop :D

As a side-note - have you tried the zune theme for XP? I hate the default "fisher-price" theme and never used any theme until microsoft released the zune theme. Makes me wonder why MS didn't release more themes.

Hi there GakunGak,

Although your wallpaper is 175kb, that will be for the original jpeg. Under the hood the wallaper must be converted to a BMP file, same resolution of your screen - the size of the original file doesn't matter.
Save your wallpaper as a BMP file at that resolution, it will be about 4mb.

As to your vista install problem, sorry I can't be of more help. I've never trusted OS upgrades, I always do a clean install - I've always had issues with junk left over from the previous version. That said tho, I've heard vista's upgrade is the best yet. But I still wouldn't trust it

One thing you could try is use partition magic (I see you've got it) to create another partition on your hard drive, and then copy all of your important stuff (like your SH3 installation ) there, then install vista from scratch and format the main windows partition during the install. Note - Be VERY careful you pick the right partition. Back up critical stuff like emails and photos, incase it all goes bad.

I'm using vista that came pre-installed on this Dell latitude d820.... So unfortunately I've never even done a vista install!
If you want to persist with the upgrade you could try un-installing the apps it is complaining about before you upgrade - the SATA drivers are a problem tho, as without those XP won't work... but vista shouldn't have a problem with those anyway.
But definitely try un-installing Cyberlink DVD player, and partition magic first, see if that helps.

GakunGak
06-23-07, 09:03 AM
johnno74, thank you for your info. I never know about wallpapers converting to BMP, I thought they stayed JPEG.... I always learn something new everyday, I guess...
As for the vista, those incompatibilities are no primary concern of mine, it's just that those drivers for my HDD cannot be found even when I'm running an update during vista setup....
Strange, as with M$ upgrade advisor, I am 100% compatible, but with setup, my HDD MAY NOT work bla bla bla...
Will wait for a SP1 then I will try again...
Thank you for your time with me, man. Ya rule!
