Playing patched vanilla.. 47% realism.

Finished 24 hours in my assigned patrol grid and decided to run U49 (VIIC) up to AM39 to see what's sailing through.. Had a pretty good time picking off lone merchants and cargos and even had a couple of fishing boats and tugs to target practice on with star shells and dual flak (zerwilling?). Was down to 3 eels when I got a contact report. Large convoy heading my way :damn:

Had plenty of fuel, lots of deck gun ammo & the weather was holding, so I thought I'd check it out.. Ran at 1/3 due west and ran into the convoy the next day. All enemies this time instead of getting the enemy/neutral mix and only guarded by 2 escorts. My favorite thing to do is to let most of the convoy pass and pick off the tail escort. By the time it's sinking, the lead escort has to hightail it back to find me.. Since the more lethal escort (V&W) was in the lead & the Flower was 3km away (bring up the rear), I chose to shoot at the V&W first. She was 600m away when my T1 left the tube. It exploded under her stern, but did not set off the racks of DC's.. She simply limped away and continued East with her stern under water. I let the rest of the convoy close and let loose another T1 into the side of a T2.. I thought convoy only consisted of T2's, C2's, C3's, Coastal & small merchants. With the T2 burning, I looked for the flower. She was running around the flank at 11 kts. I swung my stern around and let her close to 500M. My mag eel left the tube and exploded under her keel. Within seconds she sunk. With the limping V&W almost 4km away, I surfaced amist the convoy, sent off a contact report and went to town with my deck gun. I was able to sink three C3's, two T3's that I had missed seeing earlier and a small merchant. I had enough deck rounds to dispatch the V&W, but she was barely closing my position at 5 kts, so I found a remaining T2. I had a slight problem w/ ships trying to ram me (Lost 14% hull that way) .The C2's are more tonnage, but seem to take forever to sink.. Out of ammo and eels, U49 sent out her final status message and headed back to Port.. Final tally was over 111,000 tons for the patrol. I was able to change to the 2nd. flotilla & moved into a type IXB.. Could have used all those fish in that convoy!

Thanks for reading..
